#11 Wildcats fall in five sets to #7 UMD

            #7 Minnesota Duluth captured an NSIC volleyball marathon Friday evening over #11 Wayne State at Rice Auditorium in Wayne with the visiting Bulldogs prevailing 25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 25-14, 15-11.  UMD is now 16-2 and 9-1 in the NSIC while WSC drops to 16-3 and 7-3 in league play.
            The visiting Bulldogs controlled the first set, hitting .343 with 16 kills while forcing eight WSC errors as UMD registered a 25-18 first set win.
            WSC trailed a good share of the second set, but forced 11 UMD errors and rallied late to post a 26-24 victory.  Katie Stephens had four kills to pace the Wildcats, who had five players record kills in the set.
            Minnesota Duluth built early leads of 9-4 and 14-11 on the Wildcats in the third set, but WSC came back to post a 25-21 set win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.  Tarrin Beller had three kills and three blocks to pace the Wildcats, who forced nine more errors on UMD in the third set.
            The fourth set was close early with six ties and three lead changes, but UMD closed the set in dominating fashion to force a fifth set with a 25-14 fourth set win.
            The fifth set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes, but WSC could not overcome stellar hitting by UMD with 10 kills and just one error in 17 attacks for a .529 percentage as the Bulldogs scored the final four points of the match to snap an 11-11 tie and outlast the Wildcats 15-11.
            Minnesota Duluth hit .238 in the match while WSC hit .095.  The Bulldogs held a 75-43 edge in kills and 90-66 in digs.  WSC forced 31 UMD attack errors while the 'Cats had 27.  Minnesota Duluth also held an 11-9 edge in blocks.
            Tarrin Beller and Katie Stephens each had 12 kills for the Wildcats.  Beller also had seven blocks with Maddie Knobbe and Rachel Walker adding three each. 
            Senior libero Haley Kauth recorded 17 digs with Hope Carter adding 14 and Walker 11.  Walker also handed out 36 set assists in the contest.
            The Wildcats will be in action again Saturday afternoon hosting #8 St. Cloud State in an NSIC matchup starting at 4 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
