Stephens powers #8 Wildcats in sweep at Minnesota Crookston

            Senior outside hitter Katie Stephens recorded 15 kills with a .520 attack percentage to lead #8 Wayne State in a 25-14, 25-16, 25-14 Northern Sun Conference volleyball sweep at Minnesota Crookston Friday evening.  The Wildcats are now 18-3 on the season and 9-3 in league play while the host Golden Eagles drop to 4-16 and 2-10 in NSIC play.
            The first set was close early, but WSC scored six straight points to take control of the set after a 10-10 tie to win 25-14.  Stephens paced WSC in the first set with five kills while the Wildcats forced six UMC attack errors to highlight the first set win.
            UMC started the second set with a 6-4 advantage, but WSC scored 11 of the next 13 points that included service aces from Rachel Walker and Hope Carter to take a 15-8 set lead and force a Golden Eagle timeout.  WSC produced 17 kills in the set and finished with a 25-16 set win.  Stephens had the hot hand again for the Wildcats recording six kills on nine attacks with no errors.
            WSC had few problems in the third set to complete the sweep 25-14.  The 'Cats forced six Golden Eagle attack errors that included three blocks.  Freshman Kelsie Cada had a team-best five kills in the set followed by Stephens with four as the Wildcats hit .429 in the set with 13 kills and just one attack error to complete the sweep.
            Wayne State finished the match with a .359 attack percentage, the third-best team attack percentage this season.  The 'Cats had 41 kills and just eight errors on 92 attacks.  UMC hit .136 in the contest with 28 kills and 14 errors on 103 total attacks.
            WSC held a 50-34 edge in digs and 5-3 in blocks while also recording seven service aces to just one for UMC.
            Stephens paced Wayne State in hitting with 15 kills and a .520 attack percentage followed by Cada with 10 kills.  Jaci Brahmer was credited with three blocks while senior libero Haley Kauth had a team-high 12 digs with Maddie Duffy adding 10.
            Redshirt freshman setter Rachel Walker was credited with 29 set assists and had two service aces along with Tarrin Beller and Hope Carter.
            WSC will play again Saturday afternoon visiting Bemidji State in a 1 p.m. NSIC contest.
