Abby Sutton scored the lone goal of the contest five minutes into overtime to give Wayne State College 1-0 overtime win at Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer Sunday afternoon at James Malosky Stadium.
It was the second straight win by WSC over UMD in women's soccer after going 0-15-2 against the Bulldogs prior to last season and improves the Wildcats to 3-3-3 and 3-2-1 in NSIC play while the host Bulldogs drop to 3-6 and 1-5.
It was also the sixth time in eight games this season that the Wildcats went overtime, improving to 2-1-3 in extra session contests.
The host Bulldogs held a 5-3 edge in shots during the first half while both teams had four shots in the second half.
UMD had three shots in the first five minutes of overtime, but WSC made the most of its lone shot in the extra session when Sutton took a ball from
Rylie Wehner and scored at the 5:09 mark of overtime to give Wayne State the thrilling victory.
Minnesota Duluth held a 12-8 edge in shots over WSC including 8-6 in shots on goals. The Bulldogs also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks on the Wildcats.
Wehner and
Megan Phillips each had two shots on goal for WSC while
Brooke Worrel and Sutton each added one shot on goal with Sutton scoring the only goal of the contest.
Senior goalkeeper
Rachel Grisham was excellent in goal, notching five saves to record her fourth shutout of the season.
Wayne State opens a four-game home stand on Friday afternoon hosting Upper Iowa in a 3 p.m. NSIC contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
