Wildcats close Tip Off Classic with loss to Texas-Permian Basin

            Texas-Permian Basin led from start to finish in defeating the Wayne State College men's basketball 82-62 Sunday afternoon at the CCA Division II Tip Off Classic played at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, California.  The Falcons move to 1-2 on the year with the win while the Wildcats fall to 0-3.
            The third game in three days caught up to the Wildcats, who shot just 29 percent in the first half and 34.4 percent for the contest.
            WSC trailed 7-0 just 1:45 into the contest.  The 'Cats got as close as two at 9-7 following a pair of Jordan Janssen free throws at the 14:54 mark of the first half. 
            Texas-Permian Basin then scored nine of the next 10 points to go in front 18-8 with 11:18 remaining in the half. 
            A Nick Ferrarini dunk with 1:00 to go before halftime got WSC within five at 33-28, but the 'Cats ended the first half trailing 37-28.
            The Falcons from Texas-Permian Basin eliminated any chance of a Wildcat comeback in the second half by shooting 62 percent from the field (18-29).
            Wayne State's first basket in the second half was a 3-pointer by Nate Mohr that cut the UT-Permian Basin lead to 39-31.  That was the only time in the second half the Falcons did not lead by double digits as Texas-Permian Basin cruised in the second half for the 82-62 win.
            Wayne State finished the game making just 22 of 64 shots for 34.4 percent, going 4 of 25 from the 3-point line and 14 for 20 at the free throw stripe.
            Sophomore center Jordan Janssen paced Wayne State with his second double-double of the weekend, recording 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Junior forward Ben Dentlinger (12) and sophomore guard Nate Mohr (11) also hit double figures for the Wildcats.
            Texas-Permian Basin shot 48.5 percent from the field on 32 of 66 shooting.  The Falcons were 9 for 22 behind the arc and 9 for 12 from the free throw stripe.
            Jordan Horn scored a game-high 19 points for the Falcons followed by Pat Dembley with 15 points, Miles Washington 14 and Carson Newsome 10.
            WSC held a slim 41-38 edge in rebounding over UT-Permian Basin thanks to 11 boards by Janssen and nine from Dentlinger.
            Both teams had 12 turnovers in the contest, but Texas-Permian Basin held a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
            Wayne State resumes play on Friday and Saturday at the GAC/NSIC Challenge in Shawnee, Oklahoma where the Wildcats face East Central (Okla.) Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Oklahoma Baptist Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
