Wayne State College 77Â Augustana 67
The Wayne State College women's basketball team defeated Augustana 77-67 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday afternoon. WSC improves to 9-3 on the year and 4-2 in Northern Sun conference play, while Augustana drops to 6-4 and 2-4 in NSIC play. Four Wildcats scored in double digits and a career milestone was surpassed in Saturday's win as Erin Norling went over the 1,000 career point total.
The Wildcats got out to a hot start in the contest, shooting 10-16 as a team in the first quarter and took a 23-11 lead into the first break. WSC also held the Vikings to just 27 percent shooting as a team in the first quarter and at one point during the first, led 18-4. The dominant first quarter saw WSC haul in 14 rebounds while Augustana grabbed just 6.
In the second quarter, the Vikings cut into the lead, outscoring the 'Cats by six points. But WSC held onto a six point lead headed into the second half. In the third, Augustana grabbed their first lead of the game, but WSC took momentum back and stretched the lead back to six heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, WSC was able to take the game into submission with a plus six rebounding advantage and a great showing from Halley Busse as she put up nine points in the quarter and 16 in the game.
For the 'Cats, Norling led the way with 20 points on the day. Busse scored 16, while Brittany Bongartz and Kylie Hammer each contributed 12 points.
The WSC women will return to action on January 3rd and 4th when they host a pair of opponents in Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State.
