Wayne State College combined for five home runs as the Wildcats completed a three-game sweep at Fort Hays State Thursday afternoon with 9-3 and 13-7 victories over the Tigers in Hays, Kansas. The Wildcats improve to 5-1 on the young season with Fort Hays State dropping to 0-8 with the two losses.
WSC had just six hits in the opener, but took advantage of seven walks by Fort Hays State pitching to take the 9-3 win. For the second time in as many weeks, senior third baseman
Kyle Thompson belted a first inning grand slam to give the Wildcats an early 4-0 advantage.
WSC took a 6-0 lead in the second thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Alex Logelin and an RBI single from
Andrew Hanson.
The 'Cats took an 8-0 lead in the fifth on a
Colin Chick sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk to Thompson.
Fort Hays State got on the board with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to make the score 8-3 and WSC added an insurance run in the seventh on a
Bryce Bisenius solo homer to close out the scoring.
Thompson went 2 for 3 with a grand slam and four RBI to lead WSC at the plate. Bisenius produced a solo homer while
Brendan Madsen, Logelin and Hanson each singled.
Junior right hander
Hunter Wienhoff whiffed eight batters in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, now 2-0 on the season. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks. Reliever
Andrew Staebell worked the final 1 1/3 innings with hitless relief, striking out two and walking one batter.
The second game saw second baseman
Andrew Hanson fuel a balanced offensive attack going 4 for 6 with two homers, two doubles and six RBI as the Wildcats completed the sweep with a 13-7 win.
Hanson's two-run homer to left center in the first put the 'Cats in front 2-0 early. WSC took a 4-0 lead in the third with Hanson singling and scoring on a throwing error followed by an RBI triple from Thompson that scored
Bryce Bisenius (doubled).
WSC took an 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a
Jake Lemar solo blast and a three-run shot from Hanson.
After Fort Hays State scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, WSC responded with two in the fifth thanks to a pair of Tiger errors for a 10-1 lead.
Fort Hays State came up with two in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the eighth to reduce the Wildcat lead to 10-7.
The Wildcats produced three insurance runs in the ninth thanks to an RBI double from Hanson and a run scoring single from
Brendan Madsen giving WSC a 13-7 victory.
WSC had 16 hits in the win, led by Hanson's two homer and two doubles and 4-6 day along with six RBI. Shortstop
CJ Neumann was 2 for 3 with two runs scored while Madsen finished 2 for 5 with two runs. Bisenius, Thompson and
Colin Chick each added two hits with Chick scoring twice.
Sophomore left hander
Aaron Ras (1-0) earned the pitching win, working four innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Freshman
Ryan Obrecht was one of four Wildcat relievers, working two scoreless innings and charged with just one hit while fanning four.
Ryan Petersen pitched the next 1 1/3 innings followed by 2/3 of an inning from Mitch Gullikson and
Charles Hasty working a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
Wayne State is off until Friday, March 1 when the Wildcats visit Regis University in Colorado for the start of a three-game weekend series.
