Minnesota Duluth 79 Wayne State 57
Wayne State College had a season-high 25 turnovers as the Wildcats suffered their fourth straight loss with a 79-57 home setback to Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball contest played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC drops to 13-11 overall and 8-10 in league play while UMD improves to 16-5 and 15-3 in NSIC contests.
After WSC started the game with a 7-4 lead, Minnesota Duluth took the lead with an 11-0 run to grab a 15-7 lead. The Wildcats got within three at 15-12, but UMD closed the opening stanza with a 21-14 lead.
Minnesota Duluth held several leads of nine points early in the second quarter, but the host Wildcats rallied and took a short-lived lead at 31-30 on a
Maggie Lowe 3-pointer with 2:57 to play in the quarter. But the Bulldogs closed the quarter with a 9-2 run to take the lead for good at 39-33 at intermission.
WSC stayed close with UMD early in the third quarter and trailed by four points (41-37) with 8:40 to play. UMD used an 11-2 run to take control of the game for a 52-39 lead and the Bulldogs led 62-46 after three quarters.
The Bulldogs made 8 of 14 shots in the fourth quarter to keep the Wildcats from making a comeback as Minnesota Duluth finished with the 79-57 win.
Brittany Bongartz scored 12 points for Wayne State with
Erin Norling adding 11.
Wayne State made 19 of 53 shots from the field for 35.8 percent, going 5 of 13 from the 3-point line and 14 of 17 at the charity stripe.
Brooke Olson poured in a game-high 18 points for Minnesota Duluth with Sarah Grow adding 17.
UMD shot 47 percent from the field on 33 of 70 shots. The Bulldogs were 5 for 13 behind the arc and 8 for 13 at the free throw stripe.
Wayne State had one more rebound than Minnesota Duluth 38-37. Bongartz grabbed eight boards for WSC with
Haley Vesey adding six.
Halley Busse had six of Wayne State's 13 assists while Bongartz and
Amelia Ivester each had two blocks.
Wayne State will be on the road next weekend for NSIC South Division games at Concordia-St. Paul Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. and Minnesota State Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
