Errors haunt Wildcats in 10-5 loss at Emporia State

            Five Wayne State errors led to six unearned runs for Emporia State as the host Hornets erased an early 5-0 deficit to rally for a 10-5 win over the Wildcats Thursday afternoon at the Emporia State Softball Classic in Kansas.  WSC drops to 9-7 on the year with host Emporia State now 7-15.
            The 'Cats erupted for five runs in the second inning to take control early in the contest.  Abbie Hix belted a two-run homer to left field, scoring Ashley Hernandez (walk) for the first two runs.  Emily Chandler doubled and scored on a Baylee Rial single for a 3-0 WSC lead.
            Annie Grammer walked and scored on a single from Kortney Buresh for the fourth Wildcat run with Kamryn Sparks drawing a bases loaded walk to score Rial for a 5-0 Wayne State advantage.
            The host Hornets got back into the game with four runs in the third inning, using three hits and two Wildcat errors to score four runs.
            Emporia State tied the score with a single run in the third and took the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning on just one hit and two WSC errors.  ESU added one more run in the sixth for the 10-5 win.
            Both teams had seven hits in the game.  Hix was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer and two RBI to lead WSC at the plate with Chandler going 2 for 2 with a double.  Morgan Vasa, Buresh and Rial each added singles for the 'Cats.
            Freshman reliever Makenna Adkison (6-4) was tagged with the loss, yielding five runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings of work on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Starter Maddie Moser pitched the opening three innings and gave up four hits and four runs (two earned) with two walks and two strikeouts.  Senior Riley Vanderveen worked the final 1 1/3 innings and gave up an unearned run on one walk.
            Wayne State faces Northeastern State of Oklahoma Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Emporia State Classic.
