Game Recap: Softball |

WSC drops NSIC opener at #14 Augustana

Game 1 - #14 Augustana 8 Wayne State 0

Game 2 - #14 Augustana 6 Wayne State 0

#14 Augustana University limited Wayne State College to three hits in sweeping the Wildcats 8-0 and 6-0 in the NSIC softball opener for both teams played Wednesday afternoon at Bowden Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  The host Vikings are 22-5 and 2-0 in league play while WSC drops to 9-10 and 0-2 in NSIC games.
The opener was scoreless after three innings of play, but the host Vikings scored two runs in the fourth and put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth for a 7-0 lead.  Augustana then closed the game via eight-run rule with another run in the sixth inning to make the final score 8-0.
The Wildcats had just two base runners in the game as Morgan Vasa reached on an error in the fourth inning but was erased on a double play.  In the sixth inning, WSC recorded their lone hit in the game – a single by Taylor Menard to right field – but was also erased on a Viking double play.
Freshman starter Makenna Adkison (6-5) suffered the pitching loss, allowing six hits and seven runs over 4 1/3 innings with one strikeout and two walks.  Senior Riley Vanderveen worked the final 1 1/3 innings and allowed one hit and one run (unearned) with one strikeout.
The second game saw the Vikings score all six runs in the third inning as the Vikings completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory.
Augustana used six hits to score six runs in the third inning.
Both Wildcat hits came in the first inning on back-to-back singles from Emily Chandler and Abbie Hix
Sophomore Maddie Moser (3-4) was tagged the loss in the circle, charged with four runs on five hits in two innings of work.  Adkison pitched one inning and gave up two runs on two hits with Vanderveen firing three innings of scoreless relief giving up two hits with one walk.
Wayne State is scheduled to host St. Cloud State Saturday (12 p.m.) and Minnesota Duluth Sunday (12 p.m.) in NSIC doubleheaders at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
