Wildcats drop pair at #25 Minnesota State

            #25 Minnesota State rallied from a 3-0 first inning deficit to edge Wayne State College 4-3 in 10 innings in the second game to cap a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader sweep over the Wildcats Friday afternoon in Mankato, Minnesota after the host Mavericks won the opener 11-2.  WSC falls to 28-12 and 19-8 in the league with the losses while MSU is now 29-8 and 20-5 in NSIC games.
            The first game saw the host Mavericks jump on the Wildcats early, scoring five runs in the first inning, to take control of the contest right away as Minnesota State cruised to an 11-2 win.
            MSU scored five in the first, one more in the second and five runs in the third for a commanding 11-0 lead after three innings.
            Wayne State got on the board in the fifth inning as Travis Miller doubled down the left field line and scored on a Jake Lorenzini two-run homer to left field to make the score 11-2.
            The Wildcats had five hits in the contest, led by Lorenzini going 2 for 3 with a two-run homer and single.  Miller doubled while Peyton Barnes and Andrew Hanson each singled.
            Starter Aidan Breedlove (7-3) suffered the pitching loss, giving up seven hits and six runs (five earned) in one inning work plus two batters in the second.  Freshman reliever Ryan Petersen worked the final five innings and was charged with five hits and five runs (two earned) with two strikeouts. 
             The second game saw WSC take a 3-0 first inning lead, but the host Mavericks rallied and forced extra innings and won the contest in the 10th inning 4-3.
            WSC scored three runs on just one hit in the opening frame.  With two outs and no one aboard, Kyle Thompson walked and Bryce Bisenius was hit by a pitch.  Andrew Hanson reached on a MSU fielding error and Travis Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Thompson with the first run. 
            Leftfielder Colin Chick then produced a two-run single to right field that put the 'Cats in front 3-0.
            Minnesota State scored one run in the third and added two in the fifth to knot the score at 3-3.
            The game went into extra innings with the host Mavericks using a walk, wild pitch and a single up the middle in the bottom of the 10th to score the winning run as Minnesota State posted the 4-3 extra inning victory.
            Minnesota State held an 11-4 edge in hits over the Wildcats.  Lorenzini doubled for the lone extra base hit.  Chick added a two-run single with Hanson and Miller each credited with singles.
            Starter Hunter Wienhoff worked 7 2/3 innings and came away with a no-decision.  He yielded three runs (one earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks.  Reliever Andrew Staebell (0-1) suffered the loss, working the final 1 1/3 innings, charged with one run on three hits.
            Minnesota State and Wayne State close out the three-game NSIC series on Saturday with a nine-inning game slated for 12 p.m.
