Northwood (Mich.) tops Wildcat baseball 9-4

            Northwood University of Michigan rallied from an early 4-1 deficit and defeated Wayne State College 9-4 Monday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational Baseball Tournament in Auburndale, Florida.  The Timberwolves are now 5-8 on the season with the Wildcats falling to 7-6.
            Both teams scored single runs in the first inning with the Wildcats using a two-out solo homer from Andrew Hanson to get on the scoreboard first.
            WSC produced three runs in the second inning for a 4-1 lead.  Chris Cornish started the scoring with an RBI single that brought home designated hitter Noah Roberts (single) with the first run.  Leadoff batter Brendan Madsen laced a single up the middle that scored CJ Neumann (walk) with the second run while Cornish crossed home plate on an RBI single from Alex Logelin for a 4-1 Wildcat lead.
            Northwood came up with four runs in the bottom of the third on three hits and one Wildcat error to grab a 5-4 lead.
            The Timberwolves scored three more runs in the fifth inning, chasing Wildcat starter Cade Herrmann, to build an 8-4 lead.
            Northwood closed the scoring with one more run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 9-4.
            The Timberwolves held a 13-10 edge in hits over the Wildcats.  Madsen finished 3 for 5 with an RBI to lead WSC.  Bryce Bisenius and Logelin each went 2 for 5 while Hanson added a solo homer.
            Herrmann (1-2) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) over 4 1/3 innings on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. 
            Freshman Brody Sintek worked the remaining 3 2/3 innings and yielded an unearned run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
            Wayne State will be in action again Tuesday at the RussMatt Invitational facing NSIC opponent Northern State in a non-conference game starting at 9:30 a.m.
