Wildcat men fall in defensive battle against #8 Northern State 64-51

            #8 Northern State held Wayne State to just 29 percent shooting in the first half as the Wolves posted a 64-51 victory over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon in a non-conference men's college basketball game played in Rice Auditorium.  NSU is now 2-0 on the year while WSC drops to 0-2.
            WSC opened the game with the first two points of the contest for the lone Wildcat lead of the day on a Jordan Janssen jumper.
            Northern State built a double digit lead at 15-5 following a Mason Stark free throw with 13:16 to play in the half.
            Baskets by Cody McCullough and Janssen got WSC within 15-9, but the Wolves went on a 10-0 run and took a commanding 25-9 lead at the 5:54 mark of the first half.  NSU maintained a double figure lead the rest of the first half and finished with a 32-20 lead.
            The visiting Wolves maintained their double digit advantage much of the second half to close with a 64-51 win.
            WSC got as close as seven at 35-28 following a Jay Saunders basket with 14:47 to play. 
            Northern State then scored the next seven points to push the lead back to 15 at 43-28.
            The Wildcats closed within nine two other times but the Wolves always built the lead back to double figures as Northern State completed the weekend sweep in Wayne.
            Junior forward Jordan Janssen paced Wayne State with 19 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and 28th of his career.  Junior guard Nate Mohr also hit double digits with 12 points.
            Wayne State made 21 of 58 shots from the floor for 36.2 percent.  The 'Cats were only 3 for 14 behind the 3-point line and 6 of 9 at the free throw line.
            Mason Stark scored 17 points for Northern State. Andrew Kallman and Jordan Belka added 11 points each.
            NSU shot 38.5 percent from the field on 20 of 52 shots.  The Wolves were 7 of 22 from 3-point range and 17 of 25 at the foul line.
            Wayne State held a 41-33 edge in rebounding over NSU thanks to 13 boards from Janssen and nine by McCullough. 
            WSC had 20 turnovers in the game to just 11 on Northern State.  The Wolves posted 10 blocked shots in the game to two by the Wildcats.
            WSC will be on the road next weekend for NSIC South Division contests at Concordia-St. Paul Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
