Wayne State outscored Concordia-St. Paul 42-23 in the second half as the Wildcats completed at NSIC South Division weekend road sweep Saturday afternoon with an 82-60 win over the Golden Bears at Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The 'Cats move to 2-2 and 2-0 in the NSIC South while Concordia-St. Paul is 2-2 overall and 0-2 in division play.
The Wildcats used strong shooting to get off to a strong start, making 9 of 14 shots to open the game as WSC held a 29-16 lead at the 9:22 mark of the first half.
Concordia-St. Paul rallied and scored the next 13 points in a span of 2:54 to take a short-lived 33-32 lead following a pair of free throws from Carlos Barela.
WSC then used back-to-back baskets from
Justin Eagins and
Nate Mohr to take the lead for good at 36-33.
After the Golden Bears closed within one on a pair of occasions, WSC closed the half with a pair of
Jordan Janssen free throws to take a 40-37 lead at intermission.
The Wildcats scored the first five points of the second half to grab a 45-37 lead.
Concordia-St. Paul got as close as six several times, but the 'Cats put the game away midway through the second half with a 15-4 run and took a 75-52 lead on a
Nate Mohr 3-pointer with 4:54 to play and WSC closed the contest with a 82-60 win.
All 10 players that saw action in the contest scored, led by Janssen's 18 points. Freshman guard
Jay Saunders added 14 with Mohr scoring 11.
Wayne State made 31 of 64 shots from the field for 48.4 percent, including 6 of 12 behind the arc. WSC was 14-17 at the free throw line.
For Concordia-St. Paul, Carlos Barela and Jax Madson each scored 12 points with Jacob Shields adding 10.
CSP connected on 22 of 61 shots for 36 percent, going 6 of 27 from the 3-point line. The Golden Bears were 10 for 14 at the free throw line.
WSC held a 40-35 edge in rebounding thanks to nine boards from Janssen.
Saunders had four assists and three steals while senior forward
Ben Dentlinger was credited with four blocked shots and is now tied with WSC Hall of Famer Eric Henderson for the all-time blocked shots lead at WSC with 100.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend hosting Minnesota State in NSIC South Division games Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
