Payton Haliburton lifted the Wayne State College women's soccer team to their second straight victory Friday afternoon, a 2-0 Northern Sun Conference shutout win at Minnesota Crookston. WSC is now 2-5-1 and 2-3 in the NSIC while UMC drops to 1-7 and 1-4 in league play.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the opening half despite the Wildcats holding a 14-5 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Midway through the second half, Wayne State posted the first goal as freshman midfielder
Alicia Green found the back of the net off a pass from
Kaelyn Reeves for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
The 'Cats added an insurance goal with just under nine minutes to play when junior midfielder
Payton Haliburton scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Reeves to close the scoring for a 2-0 Wayne State win.
Wayne State ended the contest with a 30-9 advantage in shots and 16-3 in shots on goal. Senior
Madison Kemp had a team-high four shots with three on goal to lead the 'Cats followed by
Annika Syvrud, Haliburton,
Megan Phillips and Green with two shots each on goal.
Green and Haliburton each scored goals for the Wildcats while Reeves assisted on both goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Katherine Hageman posted her second shutout of the season and improved to 2-3-1 in goal this season while being credited with three saves.
Wayne State continues their NSIC road trip Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. contest at Bemidji State.
