Sioux Falls scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 38-17 Northern Sun Conference football victory over Wayne State College Saturday afternoon at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne. The Cougars improve to 7-3 and 4-1 in the NSIC South Division while handing Wayne State a second straight loss as the Wildcats drop to 6-4 and 3-3 in the division.
The Cougars opened the scoring late in the first quarter after stopping WSC on downs at the Wildcat 46. USF used nine plays and capped the scoring drive on a one-yard pass from Adam Mullen to Mark Leonard giving the Cougars a 7-0 lead with 3:28 to play in the first period.
Wayne State came back on the next drive and marched 75 yards on eight plays with redshirt freshman quarterback
Nick Bohn sneaking into the right corner of the end zone on a six-yard run to even the score at 7-7 with 14:44 to go before halftime.
Midway through the second quarter, Sioux Falls took the lead for good when Carter Slykhuis scored on a 23-yard run, putting the Cougars in front 14-7 with 7:41 left before halftime.
Wayne State closed first half scoring on a
Alex Powders 20-yard field goal with four seconds to go in the half to make the score 14-10 at intermission.
Sioux Falls scored points on its first possession of the third quarter, a 28-yard field goal by Nicholas Hernandez, to give the Cougars a 17-10 lead in what proved to be the lone score of the quarter.
The Cougars extended their advantage to 24-10 early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Adam Mullen found the end zone on a 12-yard run.
Following a WSC punt, Sioux Falls pushed the lead to 31-10 when junior running back Theo Reisdorfer scampered 64 yards for a touchdown with 7:25 to go in the game.
Wayne State scored on the following drive as senior
Taurean Grady hauled in a seven-yard scoring strike from Bohn to cap a 77-yard drive cutting the Cougar lead to 31-17.
The Wildcats then set up for an onside kick and Jacqueze Lockett scooped up the ball at the WSC 44 and raced to the end zone nearly untouched for a rare score off an onside kick to close the scoring.
Wayne State outgained Sioux Falls in the game 416-333. The 'Cats had 114 yards rushing and 302 yards passing while USF produced 241 yards on the ground and just 92 passing.
Senior
Anthony Watkins had 45 yards on 13 rushes to lead the Wildcat ground attack followed by Grady with three rushes for 33 yards.
Bohn completed 21 of 43 passes for 302 yards and one TD while being sacked seven times. Grady hauled in six receptions for 79 yards and one TD followed by
Mason Lee with five catches for 92 yards and
Trystn Ducker five receptions for 61 yards.
CJ Burress and
Nicholas Joynt were each credited with seven tackles each for the Wildcat defense.
The Wildcats close the 2021 season next Saturday with a 12 p.m. contest at MSU Moorhead.
