Minnesota State takes down Wayne State 63-52

            The Minnesota State Mavericks took down the Wayne State Wildcats 63-52 in NSIC women's basketball action Saturday evening in Wayne. Wayne State falls to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC while the Mavericks improve to 9-0, 5-0 in the NSIC.
            Turnovers haunted Wayne State as the 'Cats couldn't put together enough to take down the Mavericks.
            Wayne State started the opening period slow, only scoring four points, trailing 17-4 at the end of the first.
            Wayne State came out in the second period and outscored Minnesota State 19-11 in the frame, cutting the lead to three with 36 seconds remaining before ultimately trailing 28-25 at halftime.
            The Wildcats started the third by again cutting the lead to three before the Mavericks started to pull away. In the period the Mavericks outscored WSC 19-11 to take a 47-34 lead after three quarters.
            With 7:43 remaining in the fourth Wayne State cut the lead back down to eight, trailing 47-39. Wayne State was not able to get any closer the rest of the way and ended up falling to Minnesota State 63-52.
            As a team, Wayne State shot 37 percent (18-49) from the field and 30 percent (6-20) from downtown in the contest compared to 40 percent (24-60) and 24 percent from downtown (5-21) from Minnesota State. Wayne State made 10-17 free throws for 58.8 percent.
            Wayne State had one more assist 12-11 while the Mavericks had five more steals (10-5) than Wayne State. Minnesota State had 39 rebounds compared to 33 from Wayne.
            Senior guard Kylie Hammer led Wayne State's offense with 25 points.
Junior forward Kassidy Pingel had 10 rebounds on the night.
            Wayne State is on the road next weekend playing NSIC South Division games at Winona State Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Upper Iowa Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
