Hadley Chvatal fired a complete game and Wayne State scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning as the Wildcats salvaged the final game of a three-day tournament with a 3-2 win over Fort Hays State at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas. The Wildcats are now 1-5 while the Tigers drop to 4-8.
WSC opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a two out rally as
Jenna Etmans walked and later scored when
Riley Holmberg reached base on a two out Fort Hays State error for a 1-0 lead.
Fort Hays State answered in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 1-1, but WSC regained the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth when
Michaela Smith opened the frame with a single, the first of three straight Wildcat hits, and scored on a single by
Madison Gomez for a 2-1 WSC advantage.
The Tigers knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth and Wayne State came up with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh for the eventual win.
Emily Hale singled and advanced to second on a Fort Hays State throwing error. With two outs, Hale scored when
Kim Vidlak reached base on an infield single in front of home plate that gave the 'Cats a 3-2 lead.
Chvatal then retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the seventh to cap the complete game win as Wayne State won the 3-2 contest.
WSC had one more hit than Fort Hays State 7-6. Gomez was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead WSC.
Kortney Buresh had the only extra base hit of the contest – a double. Vidlak, Smith, Etmans and Hale each singled.
Chvatal (1-3) earned the complete game win, giving up just two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Wayne State will compete again next weekend at the Emporia State Tournament in Kansas, playing six games in three days starting Friday at 3 p.m. against Illinois Springfield.
