Wayne State split a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon against the Sioux Falls Cougars played at Sioux Falls Stadium as the Wildcats won the opener 7-6 followed by a 15-5 loss in the second game. WSC is now 10-13 and 9-10 in NSIC games while USF is 11-14 and 7-14 in conference play.
A five-run fifth inning fueled the Wildcats in the opener.
Trailing 1-0 entering the fourth inning, WSC tied the score at 1-1 with a
Bryce Bisenius RBI single that scored
Alex Logelin (single).
Five runs on four hits in the fifth inning put the 'Cats in front 6-1. Bisenius and
Noah Roberts each produced two-run singles to highlight the frame along with a run-scoring single from
Peyton Barnes.
Sioux Falls started a rally with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the Wildcat lead to 6-5.
WSC added a much needed insurance run in the seventh when Logelin doubled and scored on a bunt single by Barnes.
USF had one run in the seventh to reduce the Wildcat lead to 7-6 and senior
Lawson Zenner held on for the save as WSC won 7-6.
WSC had 10 hits in the game, led by Bisenius going 3 for 4 with three RBI. Barnes also had three hits with two RBI while Logelin finished 2 for 4 with a double and three runs scored.
Starter
Aidan Breedlove (2-2) recorded the pitching win with five innings of work, allowing three runs on three hits.
Andrew Staebell and Zenner each pitched one inning of relief with Zenner getting the save.
The Cougars came back in the second game with 13 hits and scoring 15 runs to earn a split with a 15-5 win in eight innings.
WSC used seven pitchers in the contest and was held to just six hits.
USF took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Bisenius got WSC on the scoreboard in the third with a solo homer.
The Cougars scored two runs in the third for a 5-1 lead and five in the fifth to take a 10-1 advantage.
WSC scored three runs in the seventh on an
Andrew Hanson solo homer and a two-run single by Roberts.
Sioux Falls had one run in the seventh and four more in the eighth to cap the 15-5 win.
Hanson was 2 for 5 with a solo homer to lead WSC at the plate while Bisenius also homered, his team-leading eighth blast of the season. Logelin, Barnes and Roberts each singled for WSC.
