The University of Mary had a walk off win in the opener 9-8 followed by a 10-5 victory over Wayne State in the nightcap to sweep a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Bismarck, North Dakota. The host Marauders are now 4-21 and 3-9 in the league while WSC drops to 4-22 and 1-13 in NSIC play.
The opener saw WSC score five runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead, but Mary came back with a walk off win in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Wildcats a heart-breaking 9-8 setback.
The 'Cats trailed 2-1 after five innings, but WSC produced two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
Paiton Tornberg and
Mary Krystofiak had RBI singles for the Wildcats.
Mary stormed back with a five-run bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-3 advantage, but Wayne State answered the inning in the top of the seventh with five runs on five hits and one Mary error to take an 8-7 lead.
Jenna Etmans and
Emily Hale each recorded two-run singles while
Riley Holmberg had an RBI single to spark the big inning.
The Wildcat momentum was quickly wiped away in the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer followed by a pair of walks and a game-winning single to give the Marauders a 9-8 win.
WSC had 13 hits in the game, two more than Mary. Etmans finished 2 for 4 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead a balanced hitting attack. Holmberg was 2 for 4 with two runs scored while
Kim Vidlak and Tornberg each added two hits.
Sophomore
Sloan Cooksey suffered the pitching loss with 3 2/3 innings of work while senior
Maddie Moser worked three innings of relief.
The second game saw WSC also out-hit Mary 12-10, but the Wildcats could not overcome a seven-run fourth inning by the Marauders in a 10-5 Mary win.
Kortney Buresh singled to start the game and scored on a
Kamryn Sparks sacrifice fly for Wayne State's first run.
The 'Cats tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third when Vidlak singled and scored on a Sparks single.
WSC took a short-lived 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run triple from Vidlak.
But Mary gained control of the game with a seven-run fourth inning for a 10-4 lead.
WSC added one run in the sixth on a Vidlak RBI single that brought home Tornberg for the 10-5 final score.
Vidlak led WSC at the plate going 4 for 4 with three RBI. Krystofiak was 2 for 3 while Buresh went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Four Wildcat pitchers saw action in the second game with Moser suffering the loss in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Callie Carraher pitched one inning, Cooksey 2/3 innings of relief and Ashley Bohanon two innings of relief.
The Wildcats travel to Minot, North Dakota Sunday for a NSIC doubleheader at Minot State starting at 12 p.m.
