Senior starting pitcher
Hunter Wienhoff fired a complete game with eight strikeouts helping Wayne State snap an eight-game losing skid and earn a split at #16 Augustana Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference baseball played at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls. The host Vikings won the opener 7-1 while WSC captured the second game by an identical 7-1 score. WSC is now 11-20 and 10-17 in the NSIC while Augustana is now 27-9 and 23-9 in conference play.
In the opener, the host Vikings used a five-run fifth inning to break open a close game as Augustana registered a 7-1 victory.
Wayne State out-hit Augustana in the contest 8-7, but left nine runners on base in the loss.
The 'Cats got off to a quick start as leadoff batter
Brenden Madsen opened the game with a solo homer to right field for a 1-0 advantage.
Augustana came up with single runs in the second and third innings for a 2-1 lead and used four hits and one Wildcat error in the fifth to produce five runs and break open a tight game for the 7-1 win.
CJ Neumann was 2 for 3 with a double while
Peyton Barnes added two singles to lead the 'Cats offensively. Madsen added a solo homer while
Alex Logelin,
Bryce Bisenius and
Andrew Hanson each singled.
Freshman
Brody Sintek (2-3) was tagged with the pitching loss, giving up five runs on just three hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Andrew Staebell and
Josh Yelick worked in relief for the Wildcats.
The second game saw Wienhoff fire a complete game win with eight strikeouts while Hanson homered twice and drove in four runs to help the Wildcats snap an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory.
The 'Cats scored first again in the second game as
Noah Roberts delivered an RBI single bringing home Logelin (hit by pitch) for a 1-0 WSC advantage.
The score stayed 1-0 until the fifth inning when WSC scored four runs for a 5-0 lead. Hanson belted a three-run homer to left center field that scored Madsen and Logelin, who both singled. Bisenius followed with a solo blast for back-to-back homers for the 'Cats putting WSC in front 5-0.
WSC took a 6-0 lead in the seventh inning when Bisenius singled and later scored on a passed ball.
Augustana avoided the shutout in the seventh, leading off the frame with a solo homer to make the score 6-1.
The Wildcats got the run back in the eighth inning as Hanson answered with a solo homer, his second long ball of the game, for a 7-1 WSC cushion to close the scoring.
Wayne State ended the game with 10 hits, led by Hanson going 2 for 5 with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Bisenius ended 2 for 4 with a homer while Barnes finished 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. Madsen, Logelin, Roberts and Neumann each singled for the 'Cats.
Wienhoff improved to 2-3 on the year with the complete game win on 116 pitches with 90 strikes. He allowed just one run on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks
