#17 WSC opens Colorado Premier Tournament with sweep over #5 Lewis

            Wayne State College used an efficient .306 attack percentage along with 12 kills from Kelsie Cada and 10 more by Taya Beller to record a 25-20, 25-14, 25-23 victory over #5 Lewis (Ill.) Friday afternoon at the Colorado Premier Volleyball Tournament in Denver, Colorado.  The 17th-ranked Wildcats move to 4-0 on the year while Lewis falls to 4-1.
            The Wildcats held a 14-9 lead at the midway point of the first set, but the Flyers scored four straight points to pull within one at 14-13 forcing a Wildcat timeout.  WSC then responded scoring six of the next eight points for a 20-15 lead and the 'Cats closed the opening set with a 25-20 win.  Beller paced the 'Cats with four kills followed by Cada with three.
            WSC reeled off 12 straight points to dominate the second set for a 25-14 win.  WSC held a 9-6 lead and scored 12 straight points with eight kills (four from Cada) to cruise in the second set victory.
            The third set was much closer with 13 ties and six lead changes between the two clubs.  The Wildcats trailed most of the set and was down 20-18.  A kill from Cada followed by a Lewis service error, attack error and Wildcat block by Maggie Brahmer and Rachel Walker put the Wildcats in front 22-21.  Tied at 23, WSC closed the set with kills from Brahmer and Cada to cap the sweep with a 25-23 win.
            Wayne State hit .306 in the match with 40 kills, 10 errors and 98 attacks.  Lewis posted a .225 attack percentage with 38 kills, 15 errors and 102 attacks.  Lewis had one more dig than WSC, 40-39, while the Wildcats had nine service aces to just two for Lewis.
            Cada led WSC in kills with 12 followed by Beller with 10 while hitting .600.  Brahmer added seven kills on 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage.  Sophomore Jessie Brandl notched a team-high 13 digs while Jordan McCormick and Rachel Walker each had three service aces.  Walker also handed out 34 set assists.
            Wayne State will play #9 Western Washington Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in another match at the Colorado Premier Tournament.
