Taya Beller and Jaz DeHaan each produced 12 kills and Wayne State forced 23 attack errors as the 17
th-ranked Wildcat volleyball team defeated #2 Angelo State of Texas 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 in the semi-finals of the Colorado Premier Tournament in Denver. The 6-0 Wildcats now advance to the championship match against #20 MSU Denver at 8 p.m. Central Time Saturday evening while 6-2 Angelo State faces #1 Concordia-St. Paul in the third place match at 5 p.m.
The first set saw the two teams exchange nine ties and six lead changes through the midway point of the set, but WSC rallied from a 12-9 deficit and surged late for a 25-21 set win.
Trailing for the final time in the first set at 15-14, WSC forced an Angelo State attack error followed by a kill from
Maggie Brahmer and service ace by
Ally Beresford gave the Wildcats the lead for good at 17-15. DeHaan and Beller each had four kills for the Wildcats in the first set win while
Rachel Walker notched nine digs.
In the second set, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage. But the Belles rallied and took an 11-10 lead. It would be the final lead for Angelo State in the set as the Wildcats used kills from DeHaan and
Kelsie Cada followed by a pair of Angelo State errors for a 14-11 cushion.
WSC pushed the second set lead to 21-15 before the Belles closed within two at 21-19 forcing a Wildcat timeout. The Wildcats closed the set by forcing four Angelo State errors that included one WSC block as the 'Cats recorded a 255-20 second set victory. Beller had four kills and two solo blocks in the set followed by Cada with three kills.
Wayne State never trailed in the third set and pulled away from a 10-10 tie to sweep the Belles 25-19. Tied at 10, WSC reeled off seven straight points highlighted by a pair of service aces from Cada to take a 17-10 lead and the Wildcats closed the match with a 25-19 third set win.
DeHaan had the hot hand for the Wildcats in the third set with six kills on nine attempts. Beller added four kills with Cada producing three to go with two aces.
Wayne State finished the match with a .264 attack percentage, recording 42 kills on 121 attempts with just 10 errors. Angelo State was held to a .116 percentage on 37 kills with 23 errors and 121 attacks. Angelo State had two more digs than WSC, 61-59, while the Wildcats held a 7-2 advantage in blocks and 5-2 edge in service aces.
Beller and DeHaan each paced Wayne State with 12 kills. Beller also led WSC with five blocks while Cada was credited with three service aces. Sophomore setter
Rachel Walker had 33 set assists and also notched a team-higgh 16 digs.
Jordan McCormick added 11 digs with
Jessie Brandl and Cada each accounting for 10.
