Friday night match vs. Dallas Baptist canceled due to COVID-19 testing protocols at DBU

            The 24th-ranked Wayne State College volleyball team opened their 2021 season Friday afternoon with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-13 victory over Westminster (Utah) at the Dallas Baptist Tournament in Texas.  Wayne State's second match Friday evening against host Dallas Baptist was canceled late Friday afternoon due to COVID-19 testing protocols within the Dallas Baptist program.
            Westminster jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the opening set, but the Wildcats rallied with eight straight points to take a 12-10 advantage following a solo block by freshman Maggie Brahmer
            WSC built a 17-14 lead following a Kelsie Cada kill, but Westminster rallied to forge ties at 18-18 and 22-22.  The 'Cats then used a Brahmer kill followed by an attack error and Cada kill to close out the first set win.
            The second set saw the Wildcats force eight Westminster attack errors while freshman Jaz DeHaan and Cada each posted four kills to pace WSC in a 25-22 set win. 
            The Wildcats controlled the third set with 13 kills and a .393 attack percentage and capped the match sweep with a 25-13 set victory.  DeHaan recorded five kills to pace the Wildcats in the set while sophomore Ally Beresford had two service aces.
            Wayne State finished the match with a .210 attack percentage, recording 35 kills on 105 attacks with just 13 errors.  Westminster hit .121 with 31 kills, 18 errors and 107 attempts.
            DeHaan led the Wildcats with 12 kills in her first collegiate match.  Cada followed with nine and Elly Larson seven to go with a .417 attack percentage.  Libero Alaina Wolff and Jessie Brandl each notched eight digs while setter Rachel Walker had 23 set assists.  Brandl and Beresford each had two service aces.
            Wayne State is scheduled to face Arkansas Tech and Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at the Dallas Baptist Tournament.
