Rachel Walker powered #1 Wayne State in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 Northern Sun Conference volleyball sweep Friday evening at Northern State in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The Wildcats are now 20-0 on the season and 10-0 in the NSIC while the host Wolves are 10-8 and 5-5 in the league. The 20
th win for Wayne State also marks the 17
th time in the last 18 seasons Wayne State volleyball has posted a 20-win season.
The 'Cats got off to a slow start and trailed much of the opening set until WSC started rolling late and pulled away for the 25-19 set win.
WSC was done 6-2 and later trailed 14-11 when the 'Cats came to life. Trailing 16-15, WSC used kills by
Taya Beller and
Rachel Walker followed by a
Havyn Heinz service ace to lead 18-16. Two Northern State attack errors along with a block by Beller and
Rachel Walker capped the scoring streak of six straight points for a 21-16 lead and the 'Cats closed the set with a 25-19 win.
Beller had six kills to pace the Wildcats in the opening set as WSC forced seven Northern State attack errors.
The second set saw the 'Cats get off to a better start and trailed just once in recording a 25-17 set win.
Wayne State had five blocks in the set while senior libero
Jessie Brandl had the hot serve scoring six points.
With WSC leading 7-6, the 'Cats used kills by
Kelsie Cada, Beller and Walker along with a Wolve attack error and a solo block by
Maggie Brahmer to push the lead to 12-7.
Later in the set, WSC scored five straight points highlighted by a pair of
Taylor Bunjer kills to take a 19-10 lead.
Cada had four kills in the set with Bunjer and Brahmer each adding three.
Northern State battled the 'Cats for most of the third set, exchanging six lead changes and 12 ties, before WSC finished off the match with a 25-21 third set win.
The Wolves forced a WSC timeout as NSU built an 11-8 advantage. With the score knotted at 20-20, WSC got kills from Beller and Cada followed by a
Brooke Peltz service ace for a 23-20 lead.
After a NSU kill, WSC closed the set with a Brahmer kill and service ace from Walker to win 25-21.
Wayne State finished the match hitting .215 while holding Northern State to .130. The 'Cats had seven more kills than NSU (43-36) and one more dig (64-63) than the Wolves. WSC had five service aces to none for NSU while the Wolves did record a 8.5-7 advantage in blocks.
Beller posted a match-high 15 kills to lead Wayne State in hitting. Cada and Walker both added double-doubles for the 'Cats as Cada accounted for 10 kills and 14 digs while Walker recorded 31 set assists with a season-high 15 digs.
Jordan McCormick had 11 digs with Brandl adding 10 while Heinz had two service aces.
The Wildcats close out their NSIC road trip Saturday afternoon in a 3:30 p.m. contest at MSU Moorhead.
