Eagins, Janssen power Wildcat men past Upper Iowa

            Justin Eagins and Jordan Janssen combined for 51 points and 26 rebounds as both players posted double-doubles leading Wayne State College in a 86-77 win over Upper Iowa Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference South Division men's basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  WSC is now 10-3 and tied for first in the NSIC South at 5-2 while Upper Iowa drops to 7-6 and 4-3 in league play.
            The game featured 14 lead changes and six ties as neither team led by more than six points until a late scoring run by Wayne State to end the game.
            Upper Iowa's biggest lead of the game was early in the contest at 11-7 with 15:32 left in the half. 
            Wayne State battled back and held a five-point lead at 24-19 before the first half ended with a 31-31 tie.
            After shooting just 37 percent (13-35) in the first half, Wayne State caught fire in the second half and connected on 20 of 32 shots for 62 percent and surged late to separate themselves from the Peacocks.
            The Peacocks held a 36-33 lead just under two minutes into the second half.  A 10-0 run by Wayne State gave the 'Cats a 41-36 lead on a Jordan Janssen basket with 15:48 to play.
            Upper Iowa answered with a scoring run and took another three point lead at 47-44 and still led 49-48 when Wayne State used a 12-3 spurt to take the lead for good at 60-52.
            The Peacocks closed to within two at 68-66 with 4:13 remaining, but Wayne State stretched the lead back to 10 at 81-71 and ended with the 86-77 win.
            Eagins scored a season-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds for his first career double-double to lead Wayne State.  Janssen followed with 25 points and 16 rebounds for his 47th career double-double.  Nate Mohr also finished in double figures with 12.
            Wayne State ended the game making 33 of 67 shots for 49.3 percent, but made 62.5 percent in the second half on 20 of 32.  WSC was 8 for 20 from the 3-point line and 12 of 16 at the free throw line.
            Upper Iowa's top scorer was Jake Hilmer with 27 points followed by Lucas Duax with 19. 
            The Peacocks shot 28 for 69 from the field for 40.6 percent, going 10 of 31 behind the arc and 11 for 13 at the free throw line.
            Wayne State held a commanding 47-29 edge in rebounding thanks to 16 boards from Janssen and 10 by Eagins.
            Eagins had a team-high four assists, Janssen had three blocked shots and Cody McCullough had three steals.
            The Wildcats return to play on Saturday, December 31 hosting Augustana in an NSIC South Division contest starting at 3:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
