Paiton Tornberg's go-ahead two-run home run highlighted a wild five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Wayne State softball team in a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Truman State Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. The Wildcats are now 2-5 on the year while Truman State falls to 1-3.
Through the first five innings, the two teams combined for just three hits.
Truman State scored one run in the first on a pair of Wildcat walks and a hit batter.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the third and one more in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.
Wayne State had just one hit entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Wildcats came up with five hits to go with one Bulldog error to score five runs and rally for the win.
Dylan Sweeney opened the inning with a single to right field followed by a
Kortney Buresh single down the left field line.
Kim Vidlak reached on a Bulldog fielding error when the first baseman dropped the ball to load the bases.
Jenna Etmans had an RBI single to third base scoring the first run of the inning.
A
Kamryn Sparks fly ball to deep left field was caught but scored two runners on the play to make the score 4-3.
Tornberg then stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer over the left field wall to complete the rally for the 5-4 win.
WSC had six hits in the game to three for Truman State. Tornberg's two-run homer was the only extra base hit of the contest. Buresh, Etmans,
Riley Holmberg,
Alle Perea and Sweeney each singled.
Junior reliever
Hadley Chvatal earned the win with four innings of relief, allowing just two hits and one run with four strikeouts and two walks. Freshman starter
Grace Lucka worked the first three innings and was charged with three runs on just one hit with four walks and three strikeouts.
The Wildcats play at the Washburn Tournament in Topeka, Kansas Friday, Saturday and Sunday. WSC faces Emporia State at 10:30 a.m. and host Washburn at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
