Lindenwood 13 Wayne State 7
Lindenwood University scored three runs in the sixth and four each in the seventh and eighth innings to outscore Wayne State College 13-7 Saturday afternoon in non-conference baseball played in St. Charles, Missouri. The host Lions improve to 3-5 while WSC drops to 1-3.
Trailing 1-0 after one inning, WSC scored twice in the second for a 2-1 lead.
Conner Fiene belted a two-run homer that scored
Colin Lynam, who singled.
After Lindenwood tied the score in the bottom of the second, WSC regained the lead at 3-2 in the top of the third with one run when
Alex Logelin doubled and later scored on an
Andrew Hanson sacrifice fly.
The host Lions began their scoring surge in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run inning to take the lead for good at 5-3 and added four more runs in the seventh for a 9-3 advantage.
Wayne State came back with their own four-run inning in the top of the eighth to reduce Lindenwood's lead to 9-7.
Noah Roberts delivered a two-run double down the right field line that scored
Andrew Hanson and
Chris Cornish, who both had RBI singles earlier in the inning.
But Lindenwood came right back with a four-run inning in the bottom of the eighth and closed with a 13-7 win.
Lindenwood held a 12-9 edge in hits over the Wildcats and also used 11 walks to help score their 13 runs.
Hanson finished 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and two RBI for WSC at the plate. Fiene was 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI while Logelin went 2 for 4 with a double and run scored. Roberts had a two-run double while
Colin Lynam and Cornish each singled.
Cade Herrmann started the game on the mound and worked 2 1/3 innings. Freshman reliever
Jackson Shelburne was the first of four relievers and suffered the loss in three innings of work charged with two runs on two hits.
Josh Renken,
Jacob Kneifl and
Josh Kilzer also pitched in relief for the Wildcats.
Wayne State and Lindenwood will close out the three-game series Sunday with a doubleheader featuring two nine-inning games starting at 1 p.m.
