Northwood (Mich.) 7 Wayne State 2
Northwood (Mich.) used a five-run fourth inning while limiting Wayne State to just four singles as the Timberwolves downed the Wildcats 7-2 Friday morning at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational in Auburndale, Florida. Northwood is now 10-8 with the win while WSC falls to 4-6.
The Timberwolves opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with one run on two hits to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Northwood took control of the contest with a five run outburst in the bottom of the fourth, using three straight singles followed by a pair of walks and another hit to fuel the big inning and take a 6-0 lead.
Wayne State got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning as
Garrett Svoboda singled with two outs, advanced to second on a
Noah Roberts walk and scored thanks to an RBI single from
Alex Logelin to make the score 6-1.
Northwood scored their final run of the game in the sixth frame for a 7-1 lead while WSC came up with its final run in the top of the ninth inning for the last score of the contest. Svoboda walked and later scored on a bases loaded free pass to
Colin Lynam for the Wildcats' final run.
The Wildcats were held in check offensively by four different Northwood pitchers, recording four singles in the contest by four different players – Logelin, Roberts,
Chase Douglas and Svoboda, who scored both Wildcat runs in the game.
Starting pitcher
Brody Sintek (1-1) was tagged with the pitching loss in four innings of work, charged with six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Relievers
Andrew Staebell and
Josh Kilzer fired four innings of one hit relief combined. Staebell fanned two batters while allowing one run on one hit and Kilzer retired all six batters in his two innings of work with two strikeouts.
Wayne State is scheduled to face D'Youville College of New York Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in their next game at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida.
