Wayne State accounted for 24 runs and 28 hits Wednesday afternoon to sweep a non-conference college baseball doubleheader 10-4 and 14-10 at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. The Wildcats improve to 4-4 on the season while the host Cardinals drop to 4-2.
The first game saw the Wildcats build a 10-0 lead as WSC cruised to a 10-4 victory. Five players had at least two hits in the game while hitting three home runs.
WSC opened the scoring in the first inning on an
Alex Logelin solo homer for a 1-0 lead.
The 'Cats added three runs in the fourth inning for a 4-0 advantage. Logelin doubled down the left field line and scored on a William Jewell throwing error for the first run of the frame.
Andrew Hanson singled and later scored on a
Chris Cornish single while Cornish crossed home plate on a fielder's choice from
Travis Baily for the third run of the inning.
A six-run fifth inning put the Wildcats in front 10-0. Logelin belted a two-run homer down the left field line to score
Noah Roberts (error) for the first two runs. Hanson tripled down the left field line and scored on a Cornish two-run blast for an 8-0 lead.
Colin Lynam and
Nick Barnett had back-to-back doubles for other key hits in the inning.
William Jewell avoided the shutout with two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh to make the final score 10-4.
Wayne State held a 12-7 edge in hits over the Cardinals. Logelin was 3 for 4 with a pair of homers, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Cornish ended 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI while Hanson finished 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored.
Colin Lynam and Barnett each added two hits with both players recording a double.
Freshman starter
Jackson Shelburne (1-1) earned the pitching win, working 4 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Ryan Petersen worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while
Josh Kilzer pitched the final frame and was charged with two runs on two hits.
The second game turned into a slugfest as the Wildcats scored runs in seven of nine innings while producing 16 hits to register a 14-10 win over the Cardinals to complete the sweep.
WSC scored two runs in the first and second innings while William Jewell came up with four runs in the second and one in the first for a 5-4 lead.
The 'Cats added three runs in the third and two in the fourth for a 9-5 lead. A two-run single from
Noah Roberts was the big hit in the third inning while WSC used two walks and a hit batter with just one hit to score two runs.
With WSC leading 9-6 entering the sixth inning, both teams plated two runs in the inning to make the score 11-8.
Chase Douglas had an RBI single while the other Wildcat run scored on a Cardinal throwing error.
William Jewell scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to close the WSC lead to 11-10. The Wildcats got one run in the eighth and two in the ninth to secure the 14-10 win.
Conner Fiene had an RBI single in the eighth
Colin Lynam connected for a two-run homer in the ninth for the final runs.
WSC had 16 hits in the win with WJC recording 14. Lynam was 3 for 5 with a homer and four runs scored. Douglas finished 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored while
Chris Cornish went 2 for 5 with a double and three runs scored.
Andrew Hanson had two hits with a double while
Nick Barnett finished 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
Relief pitcher
Josh Renken, one of five Wayne State pitchers in the contest, earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of work. He allowed just one hit and one run. Lefthander
Andrew Staebell earned the save with 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief to end the game, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.

Jacob Kneifl and
Nick Oden.
Wayne State will play five games next week in Florida on their annual spring break trip, starting with a nine-inning game vs. Notre Dame College of Ohio on Thursday, March 10th at 1:30 p.m. in Davenport, Florida.
