Game Recap: Baseball | | Beau Priegnitz

Lynam's two-run homer in 7th, Staebell's 12 K's lift WSC baseball in 2-1 win over UMC - Second game halted due to weather

Game 1 - Wayne State 2 Minnesota Crookston 1

The Wayne State baseball team used a seventh inning two-run home run from Colin Lynam and a complete-game 12 strikeout performance from Andrew Staebell to win game one of an NSIC doubleheader at Minnesota Crookston Sunday 2-1.  The second game of the doubleheader was halted due to bad weather and will be resumed Monday with Wayne State leading 8-4 after two innings.  With the win the Wildcats improve to 14-13 (8-6 NSIC) while the Golden Eagles drop to 12-19 (4-8 NSIC).
Sunday's chilly NSIC matchup saw both starting pitchers putting up zeros in the run column for the first four innings.  Andrew Staebell got the nod for the Wildcats and through the first four frames had eight strikeouts and only one hit surrendered.  Wayne State's lone hit during that span came from Colin Lynam with a single in the second.
Minnesota Crookston broke the scoreless streak in the fifth plating one run to make it a 1-0 advantage Golden Eagles.
Wayne State bats would stay silent in the fifth and sixth to keep the score 1-0 heading to the top of the seventh.  The Wildcats would collect two hits in the sixth with a Noah Roberts single and a Nick Barnett double with Roberts being thrown out at the plate during the play.  Staebell would add three more punch-outs in the two innings to bring his total to 11.
With two outs and Alex Logelin on second after his single and stolen base, Colin Lynam would step into the box and on a full count pitch drive the ball over the left-center wall to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom half of the inning. Staebell would appear from out of the dugout going for his first career complete game.  The Golden Eagles would go down 1-2-3 in the inning for a 2-1 final.
With one additional punch-out in the final frame that brought Staebell's total to a career best 12 strikeouts on the day.
Colin Lynam would prove to be the hero in the box for the Wildcats going 2 for 3 with the clutch two-run home run.  Roberts also added two hits on the day while Barnett went 1 for 3 with a double.
Staebell earns the complete game victory on the mound improving his record to 3-0 on the year.  The final stat line for Staebell read seven innings, three hits, one run, no walks and 12 Golden Eagle punch-outs.

Game two of the NSIC doubleheader produced two storms during the short period of the game.  First, being the Wildcat bats exploding for six runs in the first and two in the second.  The scoring was highlighted by an Andrew Hanson two-run home run in the first and Colin Lynam continuing his scorching hot day with a RBI double in the first and second inning. The Golden Eagles would answer with four runs of their own in the second to make it an 8-4 ballgame.
The second storm would come from the skies as the precipitation would halt game two in the top of the third to be finished Monday with a score of 8-4.
The Wildcats and Golden Eagles close out their three-game NSIC series with the resumption of Sunday's second game with WSC leading 8-4 starting at 12 p.m. followed by a nine-inning game.
