Gomez's career day at plate powers WSC softball in split vs. UMary

Game 1 - University of Mary 7 Wayne State 6

Game 2 - Wayne State 13 University of Mary 6

Junior shortstop Madison Gomez went 6 for 7 at the plate with seven RBI to lead Wayne State in an NSIC softball split with the University of Mary Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  The visiting Marauders won the opener 7-6 followed by a 13-6 Wildcat win in the second contest.  WSC is now 6-27 and 3-9 in the NSIC while the Marauders are 5-27 and 3-9 in league play.
UMary rallied from a 5-0 deficit and scored a run in the top of the seventh to edge the 'Cats 7-6.
WSC erupted for five runs in the third inning, highlighted by three-run homer from Gomez and a two-run double by Kim Vidlak, to put the 'Cats ahead.
The Marauders responded with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to knot the score at 5-5.
Wayne State regained the lead with one run in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-5 lead as Gomez singled through the right side scoring Vidlak, who singled.
But the Marauders scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to rally for the 7-6 win.
The Marauders held a 9-7 edge in hits over the Wildcats despite Gomez going 3 for 3 with a homer and four RBI.  Vidlak was 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Kortney Buresh and Jenna Etmans each singled.
Reliever Samantha Felt (2-7) was tagged with the loss working three innings of relief.  Starter Callie Carraher pitched the first four innings.
The second game saw the Wildcats post a rally, turning a 6-3 deficit into a 13-6 win to salvage a split.
The 'Cats opened with two runs in the first on a RBI double from Etmans and a run-scoring single by Gomez.
Both teams scored runs in the second to make the score 3-1.  WSC's run came on a Vidlak RBI single.
The Marauders plated five runs in the third on five hits and two Wildcat errors to grab a 6-3 lead.
The Wildcats began their comeback in the fifth inning with five runs to take a 9-6 advantage.  Gomez had the big hit again in the inning with a two-run single to go with RBI singles from Mary Krrystofiak and Riley Holmberg.
WSC added four more runs to secure the win in the sixth inning, fueled by a two-run triple down the right field line from Vidlak, along with a two-run single by Krystofiak to clinch the 13-6 win.
The 'Cats had a season-high 16 hits in the win.  Gomez and Krystofiak were each 3 for 4 with three RBI while Paiton Tornberg was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and one RBI.  Vidlak finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Buresh and Holmberg both went 2 for 5 with two runs scored.
Freshman Grace Lucka fired a complete game win in the circle for the Wildcats, improving to 1-3 on the season.  She had five strikeouts and two walks while allowing nine hits and six runs (four earned).
