Wayne State dropped a pair of one-run games at Sioux Falls in Northern Sun Conference baseball played in windy conditions in Brandon, South Dakota at First National Bank Field Saturday by scores of 9-8 in 12 innings and 1-0. WSC drops to 16-19 and 10-11 in the NSIC while Sioux Falls is now 23-19 and 15-12 in the league.
The opener saw the host Cougars send the game into extra innings with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, then scored twice in the bottom of the 12 for a 9-8 12 inning win that lasted four hours and 11 minutes.
WSC scored single runs in the first and third innings in the opener for a 2-0 lead.
Andrew Hanson's sacrifice fly scored
Noah Roberts (hit by pitch) with the first run while
Alex Logelin's RBI double in the third brought home
Garrett Svoboda (single) for the second run.
Leading 2-1 after three innings, WSC scored twice in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
Colin Lynam had an RBI single to score
Chris Cornish (double) while Lynam later scored on a
Conner Fiene sacrifice bunt.
Sioux Falls cut the WSC lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but WSC got the runs right back in the top of the sixth for a 6-3 lead.
Nick Barnett's RBI single scored Lynam (double) while Svoboda's RBI double to left field brought home
Travis Baily (walked).
WSC added another run in the top of the seventh for a 7-3 lead on a RBI groundout from Lynam that scored Hanson, who doubled.
However, the host Cougars used three hits and two walks to produce four runs and send the game into extra innings tied at 7-7.
The 'Cats appeared on the brink of taking the lead in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But the Cougars got an inning ending double play to get out of the jam.
WSC loaded the bases again in the 11th but again could not score.
The top of the 12th inning saw
Nate Sailors homer down the left field line to open the inning for an 8-7 lead, but USF came back in the bottom of the frame and scored twice with a walk off single for the 9-8 win.
Wayne State had 15 hits in the game to 10 for the Cougars. Lynam was 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored while Svoboda finished 3 for 6 with a double. Sailors ended 2 for 3 with a solo homer.
Starting pitcher
Andrew Staebell fanned 10 batters in five innings of work and got a no-decision. Senior lefthander
Ryan Petersen (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings pitched.
The second game was a pitchers' battle between
Keean Allen and Matt Graham of Sioux Falls. Both pitchers fired complete games with the Cougars scoring in the second inning for the lone run of the game in a 1-0 win.
Sioux Falls got two of their four hits in the second inning, a double and single, to take a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning,
Noah Roberts singled and reached third on a passed ball with just one out but could not score.
The fifth inning saw the Wildcats get a pair of singles with two outs but again could not reach home plate.
WSC got a double and hit batter to put runners on first and second with one out but a double play ended the scoring threat.
The 'Cats had one more hit than USF 5-4. Logelin doubled for WSC while Roberts, Barnett,
Nate Sailors and
Conner Fiene each singled.
Allen (3-3) suffered the hard luck loss in the complete game effort, charged with just one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
The Wildcats and Cougars close out their three-game NSIC series Sunday with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m.
