Wayne State 6 Bemidji State 4
Wayne State took both games in their Sunday doubleheader with Bemidji State by a game one score of 9-4 and game two final of 6-4. The Wildcats were led by
Riley Holmberg going 4 for 7 with four runs scored and 2 RBI's as well as
Kim Vidlak going 5 for 8 with four runs scored, two RBI's, two doubles and three stolen bases on the day. Wayne State improves to 13-30 (10-12 NSIC) while Bemidji State drops to 10-30 (7-13 NSIC).
The first game started fast for the Wildcat bats throwing a three spot on the scoreboard taking advantage of some Beaver errors and a scoreless frame from starting pitcher
Callie Carraher for a 3-0 Wayne State lead through one.
WSC got runners on early with back-to-back Beaver errors and plated the first run of the game when
Kim Vidlak reached on a throwing error which resulted in
Riley Holmberg to score from first on the wide throw.
Jenna Etmans RBI single scored Vidlak from second after her stolen base.
Madison Gomez laced a double down the right field line scoring Etmans and making it a 3-0 ball game.
Both squads would go scoreless in the second. Wayne State got back into the scoring column in the third plating two runs.
Holmberg led off with a single and advancing to third on Vidlak's double down the left field line putting runners in scoring position with no outs. Both runners would be brought in when
Paiton Tornberg ripped a single up the middle making it 5-0. The Beavers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half making it a 5-3 Wildcat advantage.
WSC tacked on another run in the fourth increasing their lead to 6-3. Carraher was relieved by
Samantha Felt who tossed a scoreless fourth.
Kamryn Sparks led off the inning with a walk. Pinch runner
Abby Husing stole second and would advance to third on
Kortney Buresh bunt single. Holmberg would do a job with a line drive sacrifice fly to center scoring Husing and making the score 6-3. Buresh would steal second and third but be stranded at third.
Fifth and sixth inning had no change with the score remaining 6-3. Gomez had the lone Wildcat hit in the two innings with a single up the middle in the fifth.
WSC would pad their lead in the seventh adding three runs on three hits. Holmberg got the inning started with an infield single and advancing to third on another Vidlak double. Etman's sacrifice fly brought in Holmberg, being her third run of the game. Tornberg would rip a one out double to right center to score Vidlak. Tornberg would score on a Beaver passed ball making it 9-3.
The Beavers would attempt a comeback but only plate one in the inning for a final of 9-4.
Felt would take the win (6-8) with her four inning relief effort only surrendering one run. Carraher would go the first three innings giving up three runs with one strike out.
Holmberg and Vidlak would both add two hits and three runs scored for the Cats'. Tornberg went 2 for 4 with game high three RBI's and one run scored. Etmans had two RBI's on the day. WSC had four players with two hits in the game.
Game two of the doubleheader saw the Wildcats jumping on the scoreboard right away with one run in the first. Vidlak would reach on a fielder's choice after Holmberg's single. Vidlak would successfully steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch. Etmans would get the Cats' on the board with her RBI single giving WSC an early 1-0 lead.
Hadley Chvatal would get the start and surrender three runs to the Beavers for a 3-1 advantage Bemidji State after one.
A quiet second inning from both squads would keep the score 3-1.
Wayne State would add single runs in the third and fourth tying the game at 3-3. Chvatal would toss a scoreless second and third inning with her striking out the side in the third to end her day. Carraher would take over duties in the circle hurling a scoreless fourth.
Emily Hale would enter the game in right field and lead off the third with a walk. Buresh would reach on a fielder's choice and advance to second on a stolen base. Vidlak would continue her hot day with a RBI single up the middle scoring Buresh from second for a 3-2 score after three.
Gomez led off the fourth inning with a single to right and would advance all the way to third after a fielding error by the Beaver right fielder. Gomez would come across to score on
Mary Krystofiak RBI ground out to knot it up 3-3 through four frames.
After a scoreless fifth the Wildcats took the lead bringing across three runs in the inning for a 6-3 advantage. Krystofiak would reach first on a strike out wild pitch and be pinch ran for by
Hayley Murphy. Murphy would steal second and advance to third on Buresh single who would steal second putting runners in scoring position. Holmberg RBI single would bring in Murphy. Buresh and Holmberg would come across to score on another RBI from Vidlak with Holmberg advancing and scoring on a throwing error by the Beaver centerfielder making it 6-3 through six frames.
Wayne State would go 1-2-3 in the seventh keeping it 6-3 heading to the final half inning. The Beavers would finally get to Carraher loading the bases with one out. One Beaver would come across to score on a bases load walk bringing the score to 6-4. Felt would enter the game with bases loaded one out in a 6-4 ball game to register the save and win. Felt would get a foul out and ground out to herself to secure the win and pick up her third save of the year for a 6-4 final.
Callie Carraher gets the win (4-3) going three and one-third with one earned run and three punch outs.
Hadley Chvatal would go three innings surrounding three runs with six strikeouts.
Samantha Felt picks up her third save of the season with her clutch two-third innings in the seventh.
Vidlak led the way going 3 for 4 with two RBI's, one run scored and two stolen bases. Etmans and Holmberg each added two hits while Buresh went 1 for 4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
WSC will be in action again Monday as Minnesota Crookston comes to Wayne for a noon doubleheader in another site reversal switch due to bad weather in northern Minnesota.
