Wayne State sealed the series win with a solid outing from
Keean Allen on the bump and two home runs from
Chris Cornish and
Alex Logelin for a 7-1 final. The Beavers would out hit the Wildcats in the contest 10-6, but WSC arms would strand 11 runners on base with five of those being in scoring position. Wayne State improves to 13-13 on the season (7-6 NSIC) with the Beavers dropping to 4-21 on the year (1-10 NSIC).
Sunday's matchup opened up with both teams posting scoreless frames in the first and second with Wildcat starter
Keean Allen stranding a runner on third in the second inning to keep it scoreless.
WSC would strike first on the scoreboard with a
Alex Logelin two-run home run bringing in
Cade Lynam after his one out walk to make the score 2-0 following another scoreless frame tossed by Allen.
Wayne State would extend their lead to 3-0 when
Chris Cornish drove a long ball to right that hit the top of the fence and carried over for a solo home run. Allen again would keep the Beaver bats silent to keep it 3-0 after four.
Allen kept his shutout going with another scoreless frame in the fifth to keep the score 3-0.
WSC stranded runners on second and third in the top of the sixth, while Bemidji State ended Allen's shutout plating one in the bottom half to make the score 3-1 through six innings.
The Wildcats would again get a runner in scoring position in the seventh with
Chase Douglas drawing a walk, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, but he was stranded to keep the score 3-1 after a scoreless frame tossed by Wildcat relief pitcher
Andrew Staebell.
Wayne State would add on to their lead in the eighth plating three runs making it a 6-1 game. The Wildcat bats would only register one hit in the inning, a
Noah Roberts single, that would bring in
Colin Lynam after a Beaver fielding error. WSC worked deep counts and good at bats drawing three walks and two hit by pitch in the frame resulting in the 6-1 score. That score would remain when in the bottom half Staebell would work another scoreless frame capped off with a strikeout to end the inning stranding a runner on third.
The Wildcats would tack on another run to make the score 7-1.
Colin Lynam laced a double down the left field line and after advancing to third on a wild pitch would be brought home on Roberts RBI sacrifice fly.
Andrew Staebell would come out for the ninth inning and once again toss a scoreless frame earning him the three inning save, his second of the season, for a final of 7-1.
Wayne bats were led by
Alex Logelin going 1 for 3 with the two-run homer and 3 RBI in the contest.
Noah Roberts was also a big contributor going 3 for 3 with a double and RBI and run scored while also drawing a walk.
Chris Cornish was 1 for 5 with the solo home run in the fourth.
Keean Allen got the nod and recorded the win (2-1) for the Wildcats going six innings, giving up one run, scattering eight hits, two walks and striking out five Beavers. Staebell recorded the nine out save for his second save of the season going three scoreless innings giving up two hits, one walk and punching out five batters.
The Wildcats are scheduled to visit Northern State Wednesday afternoon for an NSIC doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
