Wildcats fall in pair of one-run games to Concordia-St. Paul

            The Wayne State Wildcats lost a pair of one-run games 4-3 and 8-7 to Concordia-St. Paul in NSIC action on Senior Day at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. The Wildcats fall to 17-23 overall and 11-15 in the NSIC while CSP improves to 11-17 in the league and 17-23 overall.
            Wayne State opened up the scoring in the first game in the second inning. Senior Chris Cornish led off the frame with a single through the left side. With one out sophomore designated hitter Nick Barnett hit his third home run of the season, giving WSC a 2-0 lead after two.
            The Golden Bears answered right away in the top of the third, scoring four runs on five hits, taking the lead 4-2.
            Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the score remained 4-2 in favor of CSP before senior catcher Connor Fiene got on base with a single. Noah Roberts, a senior first baseman, moved Fiene to second with a single, before senior outfielder Alex Logelin hit a two out double to cut the deficit to one. After five innings, WSC trailed 4-3.
            Concordia-St. Paul took the first             game 4-3 as the Wildcats failed to get a runner on base in the final two innings.
            The Golden Bears outhit the Wildcats 10-6 in the game, with WSC committing two errors.
            Both starting pitchers threw compete games with junior Andrew Staebell (4-1) getting tagged with the loss. Staebell threw 7.0 innings, allowing four earned runs while recording seven strikeouts for the 'Cats.
            Roberts went 2-for-3 in the game while Barnett went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
 
            In the second game of the twin bill WSC again got on the scoreboard first with Roberts hitting a leadoff single in the bottom of the first. Logelin grounded out, but moved Roberts to second before a CSP balk put Roberts on third. Senior Andrew Hanson hit an RBI single into left field to score Roberts. Hanson would steal second and third, but got stranded at third after a strikeout and a line out ended the inning. WSC led after one, 1-0.
            CSP answered with a double and a single, but Wayne State used a double play to get out of the second still leading 1-0.
            The Golden Bears used a solo homer in the top of the fourth to knot the score 1-1.
            In the bottom of the fourth, Hanson led off with a single before stealing second. A groundout moved Hanson to third and after a walk from Barnett junior Nate Sailors broke the tie with a two-out single up the middle. Through four innings of play, WSC led 2-1.
            In the top of the fifth inning, Concordia-St. Paul scored three runs on three hits and two Wayne State errors to take the lead 4-2.
            The Wildcats got one run back in the bottom of the frame with Roberts drawing a leadoff walk. Hanson drew a one-out walk and the pair moved to second and third respectively on a wild pitch. Roberts was able to come in to score on a sacrifice fly by junior Colin Lynam. After five WSC trailed 4-3.
            In the sixth the Wildcats got on base with a walk from junior Cade Lynam. With two outs Cade Lynam stole second and scored on a single from Logelin tying the score 4-4 after six.
            Cornish had a single with one out before moving to second on a single from Colin Lynam. Barnett hit a single into right field to score Cornish from second, retaking the lead for the Wildcats. Wayne State would tack on another run on a throwing error from Concordia-St. Paul, making the score 6-4 in favor of Wayne State through seven innings.
            In the eighth WSC added another run. Cade Lynam walked to lead off the inning before a sacrifice bunt from Roberts moved Cade Lynam to second. A fly out from Logelin put Cade Lynam on third then an RBI single from Hanson would make the score 7-4 heading into the ninth.
            In the top of the ninth CSP scored four runs on three hits, taking the lead 8-7.
            Colin Lynam hit a lead-off single, putting the game tying run on base. Freshman Cam Madsen pinch ran for the 'Cats, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Garrett Svoboda. Madsen went to third on a passed ball, but a pair of strikeouts stranded the game tying run at third.
            Concordia-St. Paul won the second game 8-7.
            The Golden Bears outhit the Wildcats 12-10 in the contest, with WSC committing two errors compared to three from CSP.
            Senior Ryan Petersen (0-2) got the loss for the Wildcats, allowing two earned runs in 0.2 innings of work with a strikeout. Sophomore starting pitcher Keean Allen had a no decision tossing 5.0 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) with a strikeout.
            Hanson went 3-for-4 with two RBI and four stolen bases, moving his NSIC leading total stolen bases to 34.
            The Wildcats play their final home games of the season on Tuesday when Minnesota State comes to Wayne for a doubleheader set to start at 1:30 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
