#15 Wayne State had just four attack errors while hitting an efficient .363 as the Wildcats swept #5 West Florida at the Colorado Premier Volleyball Challenge Friday evening in Denver, Colorado. Scores of the match were 25-17, 26-24, 25-17. The Wildcats are now 6-0 on the year while handing the Argonauts (5-1) their first setback of the season.
The Wildcats never trailed in the first set while posting a 25-17 win. After WSC jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage, West Florida chipped away at the Wildcat lead and knotted the score at 11-11. The 'Cats used a
Kelsie Cada kill, a West Florida attack error and a kill from
Maggie Brahmer to take the lead for good at 14-11.
Brahmer posted five kills in five attempts to pace the 'Cats in the opening set while Cada added four kills and two service aces as WSC opened the match hitting .481 in the first set with 14 kills and just one error.
The second set saw the 'Cats rally from a 19-13 deficit as WSC scored seven of the final eight points in the set to shock the Argonauts 26-24 in the second set.
WSC still trailed 23-19, but got a kill from Brahmer and two from
Taya Beller along with a West Florida attack error to even the score at 23. After West Florida got set point at 24-23, WSC used another Beller kill followed by an Argonaut attack error and a set winning ace from sophomore
Havyn Heinz to give the Wildcats a 26-24 set win.
Beller had seven of Wayne State's 15 kills in the set while the 'Cats forced seven West Florida attack errors.
The third set saw WSC control from start to finish as the Wildcats forced nine attack errors while hitting .306 with 12 kills and just one error as Wayne State capped the sweep with a 25-17 third set victory.
Cada had five kills with Beller adding three kills and two blocks.
Wayne State finished the match hitting .363 compared to .193 for West Florida. The Argonauts held a 46-41 advantage in kills over the 'Cats but WSC forced 23 attack errors while recording just four. The 'Cats held an 8-2 edge in blocks and had a 5-3 lead in service aces.
Cada and Beller each had 13 kills for Wayne State. Brahmer added eight while hitting .667 in the win. Beller had five blocks for the 'Cats while libero
Jessie Brandl was credited with a team-high 14 digs. Setter
Rachel Walker handed out 34 set assists.
Wayne State faces #12 West Texas A&M Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Gold Division pool play match of the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver.
