#1 Wayne State forced 28 attack errors with 12 blocks and held #9 Minnesota Duluth to a .063 hitting percentage as the Wildcats posted a 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 Northern Sun Conference volleyball road sweep in Duluth, Minnesota Saturday. The win for the 16-0 Wildcats, now 6-0 in the NSIC, matches the best start to a season in school history (2010) while handing the home Bulldogs (13-1, 5-1 NSIC) their first loss of the season.
The first set was close early with nine ties and three lead changes, but a late scoring surge by the Wildcats gave WSC a 25-20 set win.
With the score tied at 19, WSC got back-to-back blocks to take a 21-19 lead. Leading 22-20, WSC got a
Kelsie Cada kill, service ace from
Rachel Walker and a block by Brahmer and Cada to seal the 25-20 set win.
Cada had four kills in the opening set for the Wildcats followed by Beller with three.
The second set saw the Wildcats force 10 UMD attack errors, highlighted by six blocks, as Wayne State cruised to a 25-16 win.
Trailing 8-7, WSC rattled off five straight points that included consecutive solo blocks by Brahmer along with one from
Jordan McCormick, giving the 'Cats a 12-8 lead. Wayne State extended the lead to 15-9 and 20-11 before finishing the set with a 25-16 win.
Brahmer had five blocks (three solo) in the set while Beller accounted for four kills to lead the 'Cats in the set.
Wayne State continued their strong play in the third set and after being close early the Wildcats sealed the sweep with a 25-15 set win.
Tied at 8-8, WSC used a pair of kills from Beller and a
Havyn Heinz service ace for an 11-8 lead that WSC would never relinquish.
Beller had seven kills in the set while Heinz,
Rachel Walker and McCormick each had service aces.
Wayne State finished the match with a .193 hitting percentage compared to .063 for the Bulldogs. The 'Cats held a 12-6 advantage in blocks and 6-3 edge in service aces while holding a 50-47 edge in digs.
Beller had 13 kills to lead Wayne State, her 14th straight match with 10 or more kills. Cada followed with eight kills while Brahmer had seven to go with 10 blocks that included three solo. Senior libero

Wayne State will play at home next weekend hosting Bemidji State Friday night at 7 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. contest.
