Northern State made the most-ever 3-point field goals against a Wayne State men's basketball team (16) as the hot shooting Wolves rolled past Wayne State Saturday evening 96-69 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, South Dakota. NSU is 12-3 and 8-1 in the NSIC while dropping to 11-5 and 6-4 in league games.
Wayne State opened the game making 10 of their first 15 shots and had a 13-0 scoring run in a span of just 2:38 to take and early 15-6 lead.
The 'Cats still led 26-21 at the 11:23 mark following a
David Harmon 3-pointer, but Northern State became the hot shooting team while WSC cooled off and the 'Cats could not keep up with the Wolves.
WSC was within two at 32-30 following an
Elijah Watson putback with 6:10 remaining in the half.
The Wolves went on a 15-3 run and finished the half making 9 of 17 3-pointers while WSC closed the half making just 4 of their last 15 shots as Northern State built a 47-36 lead at intermission.
NSU finished the opening half making 16 of 29 shots overall while WSC ended 14 of 30 after starting the game making 10 of its first 15 shots.
Justin Eagins opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to get WSC as close as nine several times, but the Wolves continued their hot shooting and maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half.
The Wolves finished 16 of 30 from the 3-point line and pulled away from the Wildcats for the 96-69 victory.
Jordan Janssen paced Wayne State with 15 points. Eagins and
Nate Mohr each added 14.
Wayne State made 28 of 67 shots for 41.8 percent, going 10 of 27 from the 3-point line. The 'Cats were 3 of 5 at the foul line.
Sam Masten had 25 points and 10 assists to lead Northern State. Josh Dilling added 21 and Jordan Belka scored 16.
The Wolves ended the game shooting 56.9 percent from the field (33-58) and 16 of 30 for 53 percent from the 3-point line, the most-ever 3's given up by a Wildcat men's basketball team. The previous mark was 15 by Minnesota Duluth in Duluth on 2/8/20.
Wayne State out-rebounded Northern State 39-31 with
Cody McCullough grabbing eight boards for the 'Cats.
Jay Saunders handed out six assists.
The Wildcats will be at home for NSIC cross division games next weekend at Rice Auditorium hosting Minot State Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the University of Mary Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
