#15 Bemidji State used key defensive stops and held Wayne State to just 48 yards rushing as the Beavers defeated the Wildcats 33-23 Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference football and the Hall of Fame Game played at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne. BSU is now 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC while WSC slips to 5-2 and 4-2 in league play. It was the first loss at home for second-year Wildcat head coach Logan Masters, who is now 9-1 in games played at Bob Cunningham Field.
The visiting Beavers struck early, scoring on their first two possessions of the game, to take a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Beaver senior quarterback Brandon Alt fired touchdown passes of 35 yards to Sage Booker and one-yard to Dhel Duncan-Busby to get BSU ahead early.
Wayne State started moving the ball late in the first quarter after starting the game with a pair of punts and got on the scoreboard with a
Boston Hensley 36-yard field goal to make the score 14-3.
Late in the second quarter the 'Cats drove the ball to the BSU 10 but had to settle for another Hensley field goal, this one from 27 yards, reducing the Bemidji State lead to 14-6 at intermission.
Wayne State's first drive of the third quarter saw the 'Cats move from their own 43 to the Beaver six, but WSC had to settle for another field goal with Hensley connecting from 24 yards to make the score 14-9.
Bemidji State found the end zone on their next two possessions to take a 27-9 lead. Alt fired a 50-yard scoring pass to Duncan-Busby for the first score followed by a one-yard run from Ali Mohammed.
The Wildcats reduced the Beaver lead to 27-16 early in the fourth quarter when junior quarterback
Nick Bohn found the end zone on a one-yard run with 13:45 remaining.
Later in the quarter, Bemidji State's Caleb Young intercepted a Bohn pass and raced 63-yards for a score giving the Beavers a 33-16 lead.
WSC responded quickly as 11 seconds later Bohn found
Ashten Schmaderer on a 75-yard pass play and the 'Cats closed within 10 at 33-23 with 8:10 to play.
The Wildcats forced a BSU punt and drove inside the five but the Beavers stopped the 'Cats on 4
th and goal to end the Wildcat comeback bid.
Bemidji State ended the game with a 462-458 edge in total offense over the Wildcats. The Beavers had 117 yards rushing and 345 passing while WSC was limited to 48 yards on the ground and 410 passing.
Bohn completed 24 of 60 passes for 410 yards (career-high) and one TD with two interceptions.
The 'Cats had three wide receivers with over 100 yards, led by Schmaderer's 155 yards on six catches and TD.
Trevor Marshall followed with seven receptions and 104 yards while sophomore
Kendrick Watkins-Hogue added six catches for 104 yards.
Latravious Boyd was the top Wildcat rusher with 30 yards on 11 carries.
Defensively junior linebacker
Alex Schall had a game-high 11 tackles with junior linebacker
Dexter Larsen adding seven.
Jacob Byrd added six tackles with a forced fumble and 37-yard fumble recovery.
The Wildcats hit the road next Saturday for an NSIC contest in Aberdeen, South Dakota against Northern State with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
