Wayne State used two goals late in the first half to hold up for a 2-1 Northern Sun Conference women's soccer victory Friday afternoon at Minnesota Crookston. The Wildcats improve to 6-6-2 on the season and 4-4-2 in league play while the host Golden Eagles are now 0-14 and 0-10 in NSIC play.
Minnesota Crookston scored the opening goal of the contest in the 28
th minute when Tessa Overbeke found the back of the net for a 1-0 Golden Eagle lead.
Wayne State responded less than five minutes later as senior
Morgan Rhodes scored just inside the circle with an assist from
Annika Syvrud to tie the score at 1-1 at the 33:14 mark.
The 'Cats took the lead for good just before intermission as junior midfielder
Kaelyn Reeves took a cross from Syvrud and scored in front of the goal for a 2-1 Wayne State lead at intermission.
After holding a 14-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, Wayne State continued their aggressive play in the second half recording another 14 shots (five on goal) while holding Minnesota Crookston without a shot as the Wildcats closed the match with a 2-1 win.
Wayne State held a 28-4 advantage in shots in the contest and 12-3 in shots on goal. The 'Cats had nine corner kicks to none for the Golden Eagles while UMC had one more foul than WSC 6-5.
Rhodes had a team-high five shots and one goal for the Wildcats. Reeves had two shots on goal including the game-winner for WSC.
Chloe Schlines and
Paige Pemberton each produced four shots while
Skylar Stueckrath posted two shots on goal. Syvrud recorded both assists in the contest and also had one shot on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Hayden Wallace was credited with two saves in the contest while picking up her sixth win of the season.
The Wildcats continue their NSIC road trip Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. contest at Bemidji State.
