#20 Minnesota Duluth women shut down Wildcats

            #20 Minnesota Duluth held Wayne State to just 22.4 percent shooting as the host Bulldogs shut down the Wildcats 66-43 Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played in Duluth, Minnesota.  UMD is now 5-1 and 2-0 in the NSIC while WSC slips to 3-2 and 0-2 in the league.
            The host Bulldogs scored the first 10 points of the game and held WSC to just two field goals in the opening quarter.  A Jordan Heckert jumper and Maya Fitzpatrick 3-pointer with 46 seconds left in the first quarter were the lone Wildcat baskets of the opening quarter as WSC trailed 17-7.
            The 'Cats then held Minnesota Duluth without a basket for just over five minutes to open the second quarter and WSC got as close as two at 19-17.  But UMD then held the Wildcats without a basket for the final five minutes of the half and the host Bulldogs held a 29-19 lead at intermission.
            Wayne State's offense could not get untracked in the second half as UMD outscored the Wildcats 19-12 in the third quarter and 18-12 in the fourth to close with the 66-43 win.  The Bulldogs shot nearly 50 percent (15-29) in the second half while WSC was held to just 6 of 26 shooting.
            Abby Kopecky and Tate Norblade led Wayne State in scoring with seven points each.  Kopecky was also Wayne State's top rebounder with six and had a team-high three steals.
            WSC finished the game making 13 of 58 shots for 22.4 percent, going 2 for 13 from the 3-point line and 15 of 22 at the free throw line.
            Taya Hakamaki scored a game-high 16 points to lead Minnesota Duluth.  Lexi Karge (13) and Taytum Rhodes (10) also hit double figures for the Bulldogs.
            UMD made 25 of 59 shots for 42.4 percent, including 3 of 12 behind the arc.  The Bulldogs were 13 for 18 at the free throw line.  Minnesota Duluth also held a sizeable 50-33 advantage in rebounding on the Wildcats.
            Wayne State is in action again Sunday afternoon visiting Concordia-St. Paul in a 4 p.m. contest.
