Concordia-St. Paul used a 16-2 scoring run to snap a 55-55 tie with just over eight minutes remaining to defeat Wayne State College 84-76 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The host Golden Bears are now 6-3 and 1-2 in the NSIC while WSC drops to 7-2 and 1-2 in league games.
Both teams had key scoring runs in the opening half before CSP closed with a 34-28 halftime lead.
With the Golden Bears in front 24-15 with 8:32 to play in the half, Wayne State went on an 11-0 run over the next 4:22 and took a short-lived 26-24 lead with 4:10 to go before halftime on a
David Harmon layup. CSP then responded with a 10-2 to close the half and take a 34-28 lead at the break.
The scoring pace picked up in the second half for both teams. The host Golden Bears built a seven-point lead at 42-35 at the 15:25 mark. Wayne State then scored nine of the next 10 points and regained the lead at 44-43 following a Harmon layup with 12:52 to play.
The two teams traded several lead changes with Wayne State's last lead coming at 53-50 on a
Trey Deveaux turnaround jumper with 9:41 remaining.
With the score tied at 55-55 at the 8:16 mark, Concordia-St. Paul took control of the game with a 16-2 scoring run over the next 4:41 to take the biggest lead of the game at 71-57 and the Golden Bears closed with a 84-76 victory.
Deveaux led Wayne State with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Harmon ended with 14 points,
Alec Millender scored 12 and
Elijah Watson had 11.
Wayne State was 32 of 75 from the field for 42.7 percent, going 4 of 18 from the 3-point line. The 'Cats were 8 for 11 at the free throw stripe.
Marcus Skeete poured in a game-high 30 points with 13 rebounds for Concordia-St. Paul. Sean Mathieu also hit double figures with 13 points.
CSP shot 40.6 percent from the field making 26 of 64 shots and was 9 of 33 from 3-point range. The Golden Bears sank 23 of 31 free throws compared to just 8 of 11 for the Wildcats.
The Golden Bears held a sizeable 49-39 advantage in rebounding. Deveaux's 10 boards led WSC followed by
Cody McCullough with eight. Millender had five assists to lead the Wildcats.
Wayne State will be at home this weekend hosting Winona State Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. and #9 Minnesota State Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
