Winona State men rally for 90-83 overtime win over Wildcats

            Winona State rallied from a 12-point deficit with just under 12 minutes left in the game to down Wayne State 90-83 in overtime Friday evening in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The Wildcats fall to 7-3 and 1-3 in the NSIC while Winona State improves to 6-1 and 3-1 in the league.
            Wayne State never trailed in the first half as the 'Cats built a 10-point lead at the 8:46 mark following a dunk by Elijah Watson.  The 'Cats held another 10-point advantage at 31-21 after a Jay Saunders jumper and led again by 10 t 41-31 after a pair of Alec Millender free throws before closing the first half with a 44-36 lead.
            Early in the second half, Winona State closed to within four at 50-46, but the Wildcats went on a 9-1 run and took their biggest lead of the game at 59-47 on a Trey Deveaux step back jumper with 11:43 remaining.
            Winona State took their first lead of the game on a Connor Dillon 3-pointer with 5:07 to play in the game.  The two teams traded four lead changes with one tie in the final five minutes with both teams holding a pair of three-point leads.
            The Warriors had a chance to win the game in regulation as Connor Dillon missed the second of two free throws with just over 12 seconds remaining and the game went into overtime tied at 76-76.
            Wayne State opened the overtime with a 3-pointer for a 79-76 lead.  A 3-point play by Connor Dillon and a 3-pointer from Ty Borowski gave the Warriors the lead for good at 82-79.  The 'Cats got as close as one at 82-81 after a Cody McCullough basket, but Winona State pushed the lead back to six at 87-81 and closed with a 90-83 overtime win.
            Deveaux led Wayne State in scoring with 21 points.  Cody McCullough followed with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds while David Harmon and JJ Ferrin each hit double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
            After shooting 56.3 percent (18-32) in the first half, Wayne State hit just 36 percent in the second half (9-25) and 2 of 7 shots in overtime to finish the game 29 of 64 for 45.3 percent.  The 'Cats were 5 for 22 behind the arc and 20 of 24 at the free throw line.
            Connor Dillon scored a game-high 40 points for Winona State.  Connor Drew and Declan Dillon each recorded 13 points for the Warriors.
            Winona State made 27 of 49 shots for 55.1 percent and was 14 of 31 (45.2%) from 3-point range while making 22 of 30 free throws.
            Both teams had 33 rebounds in the game.  McCullough's 10 boards led Wayne State with Alec Millender and Jay Saunders each adding five.  Millender also had three steals and three assists.
            Wayne State will be at home again Saturday afternoon hosting #6 Minnesota State at 3:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
