Janssen, Mohr Lead WSC to Comeback Win Against Concordia-St. Paul

    The Wildcats would trail by as many as 16 in the second half before completing comeback in overtime, winning 92-79 over Concordia-St. Paul on senior day. Wayne State now is 17-9 on the season (12-8 NSIC) while Concordia-St. Paul falls to 8-18 (6-14 NSIC). The Wildcats with the win move into a share of first place in the NSIC South Division with the final regular season contests next weekend.
 
    Nate Mohr would score the first six points on the day for the 'Cats to put them up 6-3 early in the contest. The teams would trade baskets up until the first media timeout tied up at 10-10 with 14:56 left in the first half. Concordia-St. Paul would come out of the media timeout on an 8-0 run pushing the lead to 18-10. The Wildcats would try to cut into the lead, but the lead would remain eight for the Golden Bears at 24-16 midway through the first half. Nine straight points from Jordan Janssen would cut into the CSP lead at 27-22 heading into the final media timeout of the half at the 4:47 mark. CSP would increase the lead heading into the locker room to seven at 33-26.
 
    Janssen was the leading scorer for the 'Cats in the first half with ten points along with three assists. Mohr would add six points for the 'Cats in the first half. Cody McCullough would grab five rebounds in the first half for WSC. Wayne State would shoot only 27.6% in the first half (8-29) while Concordia-St. Paul would shoot 41.4% (12-29).
 
    Concordia-St. Paul would open the second half on a 11-4 run to open their biggest lead of the game at 16 points with the score 46-30 in favor of the Golden Bears. Wayne State would then go on a 6-1 run of their own heading into the first media timeout of the half with the score 47-36 in favor of the Golden Bears. The Wildcats would go on their second run out of the media timeout which was an 8-0 run to get the lead down to 47-44 with 12:26 to play. Wayne State would take their first lead of the second half after a McCullough offensive putback to make it 53-51 in favor of the 'Cats with 7:35 remaining in the game. CSP would then go on a 12-5 run after a pair of back-to-back threes to retake the lead at 58-53 heading into the final media timeout of the contest with 4:52 left in the game. CSP would build the lead to seven with 2:34 remaining in the game before the 'Cats ended the half on a 9-2 run to tie up the game to send it to overtime tied at 75-75.
 
    The Wildcats would dominate both sides of the court in overtime building including a 10-0 run in the period to put away the Golden Bears 92-79. WSC would never trail in the overtime period and would outscore CSP in the overtime period 17-4.
 
    Janssen would lead all scorers posting 30 points, seven rebounds and a season high seven assists in the win. Mohr would add 24 points while shooting 5-12 from the three-point line. McCullough would post his eighth double-double of the season with a season high 14 points and 14 rebounds.
 
    The Wildcats would shoot 41.4% in the win (29-70) and make a season high 28 free throws off 28 attempts. CSP would shoot 43.5% from the field (27-62) while shooting 40% from beyond the arc (12-30). WSC would out rebound CSP 42-35 while Wayne state would dominate the paint scoring 42 points to the Golden Bears 28.
 
    Wayne State will be in action on Thursday, February 16th in the final home game of the year against Sioux Falls. WSC will also hit the road next Saturday February 18th against Southwest Minnesota State.
