Strange ending in opener helps WSC baseball sweep Missouri S&T

2/19/2023 4:39:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2             A strange ending to the opening game helped Wayne State College sweep Missouri S&T Sunday afternoon in non-conference college baseball in Rolla, Missouri as the Wildcats registered 6-5 and 2-1 victories.  WSC is now 2-1 while the host Miners drop to 1-2.
The opening game saw a potential game-tying three run homer negated when the batter who hit the home run with two outs failing to touch home plate and an appeal by Wayne State resulted in the game-tying run being called out at home plate to help the Wildcats win the opener 6-5.
Missouri S&T held a 3-0 lead in the opener after five innings thanks to single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and held the Wildcats hitless while allowing just two base runners on a walk and hit batter through five innings.
Wayne State stormed back in the sixth inning with four runs on three hits and a walk to take a 4-3 lead.
Freshman outfielder Carter Thomas walked and moved to third on a Quinn McCafferty single.  Cade Lynam recorded a pinch-hit single to left that scored Thomas then Colin Lynam followed with a three-run homer to left center field giving the 'Cats a 4-3 lead.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the seventh for a 6-3 lead as Hunter Babe doubled to start the frame.  Pinch runner Noah Strizek then scored on a Thomas single up the middle with Thomas scoring later on a McCafferty single for a 6-3 lead.
The bottom of the seventh saw Missouri S&T use a hit batter and single with one out to put two runners on.  Following a fielder's choice for the second out, Missouri S&T got a three-run homer to right center field from leadoff batter Chase Burgess.  But Burgess missed home plate for the tying run and a Wayne State appeal ruled in favor of the Wildcats as WSC won the contest in the most unusual way for a 6-5 win.
WSC held a 6-5 edge in hits over the Miners.  McCafferty was 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored.  Colin Lynam had a three-run homer while Babe doubled for the other extra base hit by WSC.  Thomas scored twice and singled while Cade Lynam had a pinch-hit single and RBI.
Senior reliever Ryan Obrecht picked up the win, working 2 2/3 innings and allowing two hits and two runs.  Sophomore starter Corbin Kirk pitched the first four innings and gave up three hits and three runs with four strikeouts.
The second game saw Nathan Anderson and Braden Cannon combine for a three-hitter as the Wildcats completed the sweep with a 2-1 win.
WSC took a 1-0 lead in the first when McCafferty led off the game with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Colin Lynam sacrifice fly for the early lead.
After Missouri S&T tied the score in the bottom of the third, WSC got the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth when junior catcher Kyler Essink blasted a two-out solo homer over the left field fence for a 2-1 lead.
The rest of the game was controlled by Wildcat freshman reliever Braden Cannon, who fired four hitless and scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts and one walk as Wayne State finished with a 2-1 win.
WSC had five hits in the game by five different players.  Essink homered for the lone extra base hit.  Thomas, Colin Lynam, Cade Lynam and Nate Cunningham each recorded singles.
Sophomore Nathan Anderson started the game on the hill and worked three innings, yielding just one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.  Cannon earned the win with his stellar relief effort.
Wayne State and Missouri S&T will close out their four-game non-conference series Monday with a nine-inning game starting at 1 p.m.
