Central Missouri 14 Wayne State 5 (5 inn.)
Central Missouri defeated Wayne State College 14-5 in five innings in the opening game for the Wildcat softball team Friday afternoon at the Washburn Tournament in Topeka, Kansas. The Jennies move to 8-3 with the victory while WSC drops to 0-5 on the young season.
The Jennies opened the scoring with two runs in the first and second innings and five more in the third for a 9-0 lead.
Wayne State got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as
Hayley Murphy singled to left center field followed by a
Riley Holmberg single up the middle. Murphy crossed home plate on a
Abby Husing single down the third base line for the first WSC run followed by Holmberg scoring on a
Kim Vidlak single to right center for the second run.
Central Missouri built a 14-2 lead in the fourth inning scoring five more runs.
The Wildcats came up with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out scoring.
Lauren Laudick walked to open the inning. Holmberg put down a bunt single followed by a single to shortstop by Husing to load the bases. Vidlak then laced a triple to right center field to empty the bases. But WSC could not come up with any more hits to extend the game as the Jennies won on the eight-run rule after five innings.
Central Missouri held a 12-8 advantage in hits over the Wildcats. Vidlak went 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBI. Holmberg was 2 for 3 with two runs scored on a pair of singles while Husing finished 2 for 3 with two singles. Murphy had the other Wildcat hit and scored one run.
Sophomore starter
Samantha Felt suffered the loss in the circle working the first two innings. Freshman
Sophie Stuart pitched the next 1 2/3 innings while sophomore
Grace Lucka closed the game in the circle with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to finish the game.
Wayne State resumes play Saturday in Topeka facing Northwest Missouri State at 11:30 a.m. and Fort Hays State in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
