Grace Lucka fired a four-hit shutout while senior shortstop
Kim Vidlak went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer to lead Wayne State in an 8-0 five-inning win over Kentucky Wesleyan in the Wildcats' final game at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament Friday afternoon in Clermont, Florida. WSC is now 4-15 on the year while Kentucky Wesleyan is 7-18.
WSC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the Panthers in the first inning.
Riley Holmberg opened the contest with a single to left field.
Abby Husing reached on a Kentucky Wesleyan throwing error and both players crossed home plate when
Kim Vidlak blasted a three-run homer to center field for a 3-0 Wayne State lead.
The 'Cats added another run in the third as
Hayley Murphy doubled and scored on a two-out double to right center field by
Madison Gomez giving WSC a 4-0 advantage.
Wayne State closed the game in the fifth inning scoring four runs to end the game on the eight-run rule.
Vidlak started the inning with a single and scored on a
Lauren Laudick single for the first run. A sacrifice fly by
Dylan Sweeney scored
Annika Manzanares (fielder's choice) with the second run.
Louisa Stowman's double brought home Laudick with an infield single to shortstop by
Abby Husing bringing home Stowman with the game-ending run.
Wayne State had 11 hits in the win while holding Kentucky Wesleyan to four. Holmberg finished 3 for 4 with three singles while Vidlak was 2 for 3 with a three-run homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Husing also had a multi-hit game going 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored. Stowman and Murphy each doubled.
Lucka fired a complete-game shutout for the win in the circle, improving to 2-5 on the year. She allowed just four hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Wayne State will play in the Missouri Western Crossover in St. Joseph, Missouri starting Friday facing Nebraska-Kearney at 10 a.m. and Wisconsin-Parkside at 2 p.m.
