Missouri Western takes pair from Wildcats

            Wayne State softball dropped a pair of non-conference contests at Missouri Western Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph, Missouri by scores of 6-0 and 11-1.  The host Griffons improve to 16-5 with the wins while the Wildcats drop to 4-17.
            In the opener, Missouri Western held the Wildcats to just one hit in the contest as the host Griffons posted a 6-0 shutout win.
            Missouri Western scored one run in the first and two more in the second for a 3-0 lead.  The Griffons added another run in the fifth and two in the sixth for the 6-0 final score.
            Kim Vidlak had a two-out single in the fourth inning for Wayne State's lone hit.
            Sophomore starter Samantha Felt (2-9) suffered the pitching loss working the first 3 2/3 innings.  Freshman Sophie Stuart worked the remaining 2 1/3 innings.
            The second game saw Missouri Western take control of the game with a six-run third inning to complete the sweep with an 11-1 victory in five innings.
            The Wildcats scored their run in the fourth inning as Morgan Beaty's pinch-hit single to right center field drove home Annika Manzanares who reached on a fielder's choice.
            Missouri Western held a 9-5 advantage in hits over the 'Cats.  Vidlak was 2 for 3 with a double to lead WSC in hitting.  Beaty had an RBI single while Paiton Tornberg and Riley Holmberg each singled.
            Sophomore Grace Lucka (2-6) was tagged with the pitching loss in two innings of work.  Callie Carraher and Hadley Chvatal both worked in relief for the Wildcats.
            The Wildcats play another doubleheader on Monday visiting Northwest Missouri State in Maryville starting at 12 p.m.
