A six-run sixth inning by Southwest Minnesota State rallied the Mustangs in a 6-3 win over Wayne State Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader played at Mattke Field in Marshall, Minnesota. The host Mustangs then held the Wildcats to just two hits in the second game for a 3-0 win to complete a sweep, giving SMSU records of 8-23 and 3-9 overall while the Wildcats are now 9-27 and 4-9 in the NSIC.
Wayne State held a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth in the opener until the Mustangs erupted for six runs to rally for the win.
The 'Cats had four hits in the third inning to score their first run, but left the bases loaded and had a runner thrown out at home plate.
Kim Vidlak had an infield single and later scored on a
Madison Gomez sacrifice fly for the first Wildcat run.
WSC took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when
Riley Holmberg tripled to right center field and scored on a throwing error by the Mustangs.
But SMSU came up with five hits in the bottom of the sixth to score six runs to rally for the 6-3 win.
Lauren Laudick hit a solo homer in the seventh to close the scoring.
WSC held a 10-8 edge in hits over the Mustangs. Laudick was 3 for 4 with a homer, triple and RBI. Vidlak was 2 for 4 with a double and run scored while Holmberg tripled.
Sophomore starter
Grace Lucka suffered the pitching loss, working 5 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout. Freshman
Sophie Stuart pitched the final 2/3 innings and gave up one hit with one walk.
The second game saw SMSU starter Karlie Miller hold the Wildcats to just two hits while striking out 10 Wildcats as the Mustangs completed the sweep with a 3-0 victory.
SMSU scored one run in the second and added two insurance runs in the fifth for the 3-0 win.
WSC had a first inning single by Vidlak and a fourth inning single from
Paiton Tornberg as the lone hits in the game.
Sophomore starter Sami Felt was tagged with the loss working the first two innings. Senior
Hadley Chvatal pitched three innings of relief allowing two runs on four hits while Stuart struck out two batters in the sixth inning to close the game for Wildcat pitchers.
Wayne State will be at home this weekend, hosting Northern State Saturday and MSU Moorhead Sunday in NSIC doubleheaders starting at noon both days.
