NCBWA Central Region Player of the Week Release

For the second straight week Wayne State College has the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) Central Region Player of the Week as freshman catcher Trey Wells was announced Wednesday morning as this week's selection after teammate Colin Lynam earned the honor last week.
Wells, a graduate of Elkhorn North HS, was also selected Tuesday as NSIC Player of the Week after posting a .476 average last week going 10 for 21 at the plate with six home runs and 12 RBIs with a 1.381 slugging percentage.  Wells blasted home runs in four straight games last week, highlighted by three solo homers vs. Minot State last Wednesday afternoon.  He followed that game with another home run and a second that was reduced to a single due to a technicality in a walk off 13-12 10-inning win over the Beavers.
Wells added a three-run homer Friday in a 10-8 win at Upper Iowa and was 4 for 5 with a double and three RBIs in a 12-5 win over the Peacocks.
The NCBWA Central Region committee consists of 15 voters with five representatives each from the GAC, MIAA and NSIC. Weekly regular season rankings began on February 13 and run through May 8. The Central Region of NCAA DII Baseball is comprised of three conferences – the Great American Conference, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference – featuring 39 programs spanning nine states.
Wayne State is 18-18 overall and 12-10 in the NSIC following Tuesday's home split vs. Winona State (W 9-1, L 6-5) and the Wildcats will host Concordia-St. Paul in a three-game NSIC series this weekend at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex with a doubleheader Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and a nine-inning game Sunday at 12 p.m.
